My friends and I have this game we play when we’re bored. We go online and message as many people as possible and try to get a date on the same day. It’s risky since we meet all sorts of people but the thrill of it is so addictive. Most of the time, we meet lonely men, get free food and go back home. However, it was only a matter of time before we met a sketchy person online.

We met up at my parents’ house as usual for a sleepover since my parents were always away on business trips. After a few drinks, my friends took out their phones and started looking for dates online. Things were slow that night. Most of the dates were too sketchy even for us.

“Do we call it a night?” I asked them.

I was normally the reasonable one in the group and made most of the final decisions.

“Yeah, it looks like no one is online today.” One of the girls said.

We started playing card games to pass the time before retiring to bed but almost an hour later, I got a notification on my phone. It was a message from one of the guys I had messaged earlier.

“Hi, beautiful. I’d love to meet you too. What are you up to tonight?”

I showed my friends and suddenly everyone perked up.

“Answer him.” One of the girls said.

“Nothing. What do you have in mind?”

He replied telling me to go and meet him. This wasn’t new. Some of the guys preferred to meet at their place and we would go. Looking back, we were really taking big risks.

It was around 11 pm and I wasn’t comfortable going to meet a complete stranger at that time. As we debated whether to go or not, he sent his address and Ksh 2000 for cab money.

“He sent me money,” I said.

“Oh my God, we have to go. This one will show us a good time.”

“Yeah. Let’s go on a road trip.” My friend suggested.

I was always on board with all her wild ideas but I wasn’t sure about this one.

“That’s a bit too far.”

“Come on. Your parents are gone for the week. They won’t find out. Besides, we’re not going that far.”

“The money isn’t enough for a cab and I don’t think that anyone will agree to take us there.”

“Let’s take your dad’s car.”

I checked my phone again and the distance was approximately 80 kilometres. I wasn’t worried about driving that far but I didn’t know the place very well and I was scared about being robbed. The place had a reputation for carjacking and mugging.

Things were escalating fast and any excuse I made was shut down. I had no option but to go along with the plan since I was outnumbered. Once I got the car out of the garage, the rowdy girls got in and we headed to our destination.

At first, I was against the idea but as we drove, singing and bantering in the car, I couldn’t help but feel happy. We even saw wildlife along the way which was scary but beautiful. My friend kept in contact with the online guy to make sure that he didn’t ghost us when we got there.

“I’m waiting for you.” He texted then followed with a selfie of himself.

“He’s so cute.” My friend said after getting the picture.

“Are we almost there?” Another girl asked.

“We are 30 minutes away.”

We had spent a surprisingly short time getting there. The pin led us to a huge mansion in the middle of nowhere.

“Oh my God, is this where the Illuminati live?” One of the girls joked as we admired the house.

I called him and let him know that we were outside the gate and he came out almost immediately.

“Is this your car?”

“No, it’s my dad’s,” I answered.

“Okay. This is also my parents’ house.”

He opened the gate and we drove in. I parked next to two other girls and the girls got out. After greeting them, he came to my side and opened the door for me.

“Welcome.” He said as I came out of the car.

We hugged like we were long-lost lovers yet it was the first time we were meeting. I was already getting good vibes from him. We went to the house where the girls had already made themselves comfortable.

The guy treated us like queens. Anything we wanted, he got for us. I think we ate and drank almost everything in the house and the guy didn’t complain even once.

My plan was to leave around 3 am and return the car before any of our neighbours noticed anything. However, I was too drunk to drive. We ended up sleeping at the guy’s house and left first thing in the morning.

Luckily, it was a Sunday and most of our neighbours had gone to church. No one really asked why I was driving my dad’s house and if they did, my excuse was I had gone to church. We managed to get back home unnoticed and I made sure everything in the car was exactly the way my dad left, especially the driver’s side.

However, I wasn’t very worried about getting in trouble. My parents rarely got angry with me. Nonetheless, taking my dad’s car to meet an online lover was the biggest risk I had ever taken. Things could have gone horribly wrong that night but it turned out to be one of the best nights of my life.

Sometimes, my friends and I remind each other of that night and laugh hysterically. We have never and probably will never experience anything like that. I didn’t end up dating the guy but we have remained friends ever since that day. He became another partner in crime and we have so many fond memories together.
