Have you ever scrolled through a streaming platform to find a series to watch and found yourself conflicted? Well, I used to until I started using Showmax. The streaming platform is packed with so many shows that are not only relatable but also captivating from the first episode. The best thing about Showmax is that most of their incredible shows are African and not your stereotypical kind. To make it easy for you to find a show that will appeal to your interest, here is a list of some of my favourite shows.
1. The Wife
The wife is a Showmax original drama that follows the life of a young journalist Hlomu (Skeem Isipho), who falls in love with a taxi driver Mqhele (Bonzo Khoza). As they get to know each other, she realises he owns a taxi empire alongside his 7 brothers. Their love story becomes complicated once she is forced to turn a blind eye to the criminal methods Mqhele and his brothers use to maintain their empire. The wife is based on a best-seller novel and has captured the attention of many since its release in 2021.

2. Kina
Kina is an award-winning drama series that revolves around the lives of two families, the Tandalas and the Mwakazis. Nana Tandala, played by Sanaipei Tande, is an ambitious woman who goes through extremes to avoid going back to poverty. In an attempt to save her company from a crisis, she makes a life-changing mistake. This sets Bella Mwakazi (Alice Wangari) on a mission to uncover the truth.

3. County 49
County 49 is an original Showmax Kenyan thriller series set in a fictional county named Bwatele. The story centers around Nerimah Mkung (Wakio Mzenge), a newly appointed governor who is taken hostage by a mysterious gang hellbent on stopping corruption and getting back their money.

4. Single Kiasi
Three friends take us through the everyday benefits and challenges of relationships, marriage and careers in this Showmax original. Sintamei, played by Gathoni Mutua, is a career-driven woman whose life is like a dream. She works in a prestigious law firm and has been happily married for ten years until she discovers her husband’s infidelity. Mariah (Minnie Kariuki) is your everyday socialite who has a taste for the finer things in life and is not afraid to use her beauty to get what she wants. Rebecca (Faith Kibathi) is a mother of two who has lived with her high school sweetheart for nine years despite not being married. Their friendship helps them to navigate through the Nairobi dating scene.

5. Pepeta
Released in 2022, Pepeta is a Showmax original crime drama based on the real-life story of Harun “Rio” Wathari. The series focuses on Junior (Brahim Ouma), a 17-year-old talented footballer who gets involved in the thrilling life of crime while also trying to fulfil his football dreams.

6. Gomora
Gomora is a story that highlights the thin line between the rich and the poor. It follows the lives of two families and how their world collides due to a series of unfortunate events. As you dive into the world of these families, you will discover a thrilling and complex story of inequality, romance and prejudice.

7. Njoro Wa Uba
If you are a fan of comedy, then Njoro Wa Uba should be on your binge list. This award-winning comedy follows the life of Njoroge (Joe Kinyua), a taxi driver who lost his job at a bank due to a scandal. As he navigates through his job, he has to juggle between caring for his daughter, paying his legal fees and making ends meet. In addition, he has to deal with his ever-demanding mother-in-law and his con lawyer. The show is packed with humor, but it also touches on everyday problems in Nairobi, which his clients bring out.

8. Varshita
Varshita is a spin-off comedy-drama from Auntie boss, which used to air on NTV a few years back. The story is centered on Varshita (Eve D’Souza), an Indian woman who forms an unhealthy crush on a man named Donovan (Maqbul Mohammed). As Varshita’s family tries to break off their forced relationship, Don’s parents encourage the relationship with hopes of getting a dowry from her family.

9. Igiza
Igiza tells the story of two twin sisters, Linda and Nicole, played by Serah Ndanu. Linda is a fashion designer who lives lavishly and has the perfect family. Her life takes a turn for the worst when her sister Nicole who was locked up for years, shows up ready for revenge. When Linda thinks things are bad, her husband joins the money laundering world, making her life even more difficult. This Showmax original series set in Nairobi will have you yearning for the next episode.

10. Jua Kali
Jua Kali is a compelling Swahili series that focuses on Professor Bill (Rainfred Masako), a shady man who uses people for selfish gain. However, his life begins to change when people with sinister motives enter his life.

11. Crime and Justice Lagos
This thrilling crime drama sets off in Lagos, where a fictional Serious and Special crimes unit is set up to deal with criminals within the city. The unit comprises an elite team of detectives led by Superintendent Kelechi (Folu Storms) and Superintendent Danladi (Jammal Ibrahim). The two have different motives for joining the force. However, their differences make them a dynamic duo dealing with challenging crimes as they gain each other’s trust.

Salem is a captivating series that captures the lives of two families whose lives are turned upside down due to a devastating event. The Mufasas live a high-end life but are intent on hiding the cracks in their family. On the other hand, the Karanis are a humble loving tight-knit family.
