After a tough year, I was ready to usher in the new year. Like many, 2022 was full of character development. It almost felt like I was getting one bad news after another. From my best friend passing away to my business crumbling, I had grown numb to the disappointment and heartache. However, there was one good thing that came out of the year. I had been saving diligently for two good years to buy myself a car and I thought it was an appropriate time.

I consulted with my financial advisor aka my mother and she also agreed. It was about time that I joined the car owners club.

“It’s a very good idea.” She said happily.

“But mum, what about the business? I could use that money to revive it.”

“Leave that business alone. It has drained you until you look older than your age. Enjoy your money, my son. If you keep stressing yourself with businesses, you’ll die early like your father.”

She seemed to believe that my father died because of overworking even though he had been suffering from cancer for years. Nonetheless, I listened to her and went to buy a car. I had saved enough to get a decent car but nothing prepared me for the shock I received at the car yards.

“How much is this one?” I asked the salesman after he had rambled on about its specifications.

“This one is Ksh 3.5 million.” He replied casually.

This was the third car that was way above my budget. Finally, I gave up and requested to see cheaper ones. It certainly wasn’t the right time to buy a German car.

“What’s your budget?” The salesman asked after seeing that he might lose a big commission.

“I have Ksh 1 million,” I answered.

“Since you’re a good man and you deserve a good car, we can help you buy whichever car you want. We have bank financing options that are very flexible and friendly.”

My ears perked up when he said I could buy whichever car I wanted.

“Even that one?” I pointed at the sleek Mercedes e350 that I had been lusting over. However, I had to come back to reality despite the enticing offer.

I accepted the bank financing option but chose a more affordable car and that’s how I ended up buying the Mercedes a180. It might not have been the car of my dreams but it was a Mercedes and it looked gorgeous. I couldn’t stop staring at it when I got home.

“Heh, Martin, is that your car?” One of my neighbours asked after she found me standing next to it.

“Yes, I just got it.”

“It looks good. At least you’ll welcome the new year with a new car.”

Then it hit me that the new year was literally days away and I hadn’t made any plans. I had been so busy car hunting that it slipped my mind.

“Speaking of the new year, what’s your plan?” I asked her.

“I don’t have any.”

“We can go out together.” I offered and she quickly agreed.

She smiled at me and then walked by seductively. I stared at her for a minute until she disappeared from my sight. I had the longest crush on this girl but I hadn’t been able to tell her how I felt. This New Year’s date was my opportunity to make a good impression on her although she already seemed impressed by the car.

Meanwhile, I made sure I was well acquainted with my new car to avoid any embarrassment. The car drove so nicely. I spent hours just driving around my estate and any time I would pass a group of people, they would turn to look at me. I won’t lie, it felt good and after a whole year of disappointments, the new addition brought a smile to my face.

New Year’s Eve was finally here and the girl woke me up to remind me of our plans.

“Happy New Year’s Eve!!” She screamed.

“Yeah. What’s up?”

“I hope you haven’t forgotten about our plans.”

“Of course not.”

“Okay. I’ll come by your house so we can pre-game.”

Her excitement was contagious and it got me pretty excited as well for New Year’s. I had a new car that I was ready to show off and a beautiful girl to accompany me. I felt like the king of the world.

At around 4 pm, she came by my house visibly drunk and holding a bottle of gin. I helped her in and sat her on one of the couches.

“Why are you not drinking?” She asked, slurring her words.

“I’m driving.”

“Ooh. That car is so fly, by the way. I can’t wait to have sex in it.” She said and smiled at me.

She knew exactly how to get a guy excited and now, I couldn’t stop thinking of her beautiful naked body.

By the time we got to the club, she was wasted and could barely walk straight. Still, she looked hot. I bumped into some friends and joined them at their table. We partied till around 3 am when she finally tapped out.

“I want to sleep.” She said.

I bid my friends goodbye and then went to my car with her. As we walked, she kept saying that she felt sick but I kept ignoring her. I thought she was making excuses to bail out on me. We finally got to the car and I put her in the back seat and then joined her on the other side.

As I tried to flirt and touch her, she started getting the hiccups and then it hit me that she was going to vomit.

“Don’t vomit in my car!” I tried to warn her.

She struggled to open the door and as I helped her, I felt a warm liquid on my back. She not only vomited in my car but also on my back. I was lost for words and simply got out, removed my shirt and drove home.

By the time we got to the apartment, she had sobered up a little and was able to walk to her apartment alone. I stayed in the car trying to process what had just happened.

I finally got out and then called the caretaker immediately to come and wash the car. He surprisingly came and I stayed with him as I narrated what had happened. We laughed about it but deep down, I was angry that I had started the new year in such a bad way. I saw the girl in the morning but barely said anything to her. Since that day, we haven’t hung out again and I don’t think we ever will.
