When you are broke you see life in a whole new different way. Things can get really hard and you really struggle to get things done. Sometimes the brokenness is only for a few days or weeks but sometimes you just seem to have years upon years of brokenness. Sometimes it is just you who is broke but sometimes it is you, your friends and sometimes it is even everyone you know. We cannot forget what happened during the pandemic when people lost their source of livelihood and people went from having money one day to being broke the next or the next month.

A Twitter user by the name of @kimuzi paused a question asking people about when they were seriously broke. Twitter users came through and told of their lowest moments. The tweets show the tough times of being broke.

What is the lowest level of being broke have you ever reached in your life?

This Twitter user by the name @Njau_, had his lowest financial moment during the Covid-19 pandemic period. The last thing one would have wanted to experience during the COVID-19 pandemic was to be outside the home after the 9:00 p.m. curfew. There was a time during this period when @Njau_ did not have transport. One can imagine how scary this must have felt.

This one time I was working at muthaiga area. I had no fare to go home, I used to live in Kikuyu. I walked all the way, mind you it was during Corona, curfew ilikua ya 9 pm. @njau

Campus seems to be one place where most people seem to have financial challenges. It is a period where one is stretching their adulthood muscles and money is a very limited resource. A Twitter user by the name @Kossie___, experienced financial challenges in campus.

In campus. Had not eaten supper so slept hungry, no breakfast the next morning. By 11 am I was feeling dizzy, then a roommate accidentally dropped a 40b coin if I can rem well. Niliikanyaga. Went to get something to eat, later nikaskiza akiuliza. I literally felt like a thief… @Kossie___,

A user by the name @KakituMusik, experienced a financial challenge at a certain time when he found it difficult to find food.

Kuna siku I was emptying zile mitungi za maziwa nipate maziwa ya kuteremsha na kdf pale landmawe. Sigh! @KakituMusik

Yet again, the campus was a place where someone experienced serious brokenness. A user by the name @johnny_mwaura had an experience that some could relate to.

Kupika ugali kavu tukiwa campus. Yaani unakosa mbao ya kununua sukuma @Johnny_Mwaura

Being broke may make bills such as rent remain unpaid, piling up the balance to an amount that may be difficult to pay. Like this one user here.

At some point in my life, nlikuwa nalipa rent ya 2700. Nlikuwa na arrears za around 26K. I won’t go into the nitty gritties but I won’t wish such on my worst enemy bana. @BabjiGee

When one is broke, eating food involves getting the stomach full at all costs. That was the case for the following Twitter user by name @wangari_mm.

Had zero bob..but had one egg ilikua imebaki Nikapika nikaongeza maji. @wangari_mm

Being broke can make one think out of the box on how to survive, like this Twitter user by the name @morgan_…. He had to go the extra mile of waking up at 4:00 o’clock to go make chapos so as to get something at the end of the day, and his friends to get something to eat.

In campus pale Moi University, tulikua tunakaa 3 niggas kwa hao ya 1200,tulikua tunasota kama shit until I decided kwenda kwa Mathee to convince her nikue naamka 4 nampikia chapoo then maboys wangu wakuje wakule bure instead of paying me. We look back and Thank God na Ma Ma boys. @morgan_Kiplimo

When one is broke, sometimes the ability to be open with friends can be difficult. Here, a Twitter user with the handle @_CrazyNairobian had to do what he had to do to survive.

Nikiwa Kabete nili-host second year flani alikuwa attacho ndio tulipe rent 50 – 50, jamaa ali discover baadaye ile rent nusu alikuwa ananipea ndio ilikuwa full rent na bado nabaki na change. @_CrazyNairobian

The Twitter user @kimuzi_ who had asked the question gave his experience. That he had one day been broke to the extent of lacking 20 bob transport, and he had to go back home and rest first before resuming life in Nairobi.

Nmewaikosa 20 Bob from K road to Roysambu. Next day ,nkaomba lift, nkaenda kaptagat nkakaa home a whole one month. @Kimuzi_

When you are broke, you get to know who your friends are. Like this Twitter user with the handle @jonty_kulez.

Back 2015 pale githurai, was living with a friend then, day Moja i had nothing in my pocket, ilibidi nilale njaa bana na besty yangu alikuwa na rwambe kwa wallet hangenipea hata 10 ya sukuma men,,this lives fresh,,,,, @jonty_kulez

You can become broke in an instant and things you could do the previous month cannot be done this month.  From paying 24,000 rent the previous month to lacking even ten shillings. A user with the handle @WamboiKuria became broke at a very critical moment.

I once kosad rent of 24,000, the month ended, I had absolutely nothing, I mean zero. I didn’t know where to get it and I had no hopes. It was my first time to experience that. Nilitafuta hadi 10 bob in my house and there was none. @WamboiKuria

The worst that can happen is feeling unwell, and broke and the landlord has closed up your house.  Though one is in dire need of a place to sleep as they recuperate, being broke makes that impossible. We thank God for good relatives.

2019 long holiday. I had just left the hospital for a major operation, scar Bado kuheal na tukafungiwa nyumba, rent way 2200. We only had 250bob tukapanda gari to pretend visiting our relative yet we needed a place to sleep, anyway they paid our 2 months rent gave us food too. @bevalynekwambo3

Being broke is something that most people have encountered. Most people have had an experience with a lack of money. It really pinches painfully when one needs something basic yet they cannot afford it.  Always try to be kind to people going through tough financial situations. If you are in a position to help please do.
