Medication, although effective as a form of treatment often bears the risk of side effects. For people who struggle with allergies, there may be a reluctance to take antihistamines all the time. Antihistamines are drugs that treat allergic rhinitis and other allergies as well. Here are some natural antihistamines to try if you often deal with allergies.

Apples

Apples are one of the best natural antihistamines. They are rich in quercetin and flavonoid, both of which are natural antioxidants that help lessen respiratory allergies. One study found that people who eat apples had better protection against asthma and other respiratory allergies. Quercetin helps prevent wheezing in adolescents and prevents different types of allergies in pregnant women and children.

There may be something to that old age, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Quercetin is also found in onions, grapefruit, oregano, chili peppers, asparagus, spinach and kale, cranberry and blueberry, cherries, lettuce, and asparagus. You can take quercetin as a supplement or simply consume more foods that are rich in it. If you have kidney disease, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, it may have adverse effects so you should speak to a doctor first.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C boosts the immune system and functions as a natural antihistamine. It is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties which help in the treatment of allergies. You can get your daily supply of vitamin C either from fruits and vegetables or as a supplement. Some food rich in vitamin C includes bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe melon, cauliflower, citrus fruits, kiwifruit, strawberries, tomatoes, and winter squash.

Pineapples

Pineapples have a compound called bromelain which is effective in treating respiratory distress and inflammation in patients with allergies. One study found that bromelain reduces allergic sensitization and allergic airway disease because it has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. You can raise your bromelain intake by taking supplements or just by consuming more pineapples. If you choose the supplement route, it’s important to note that oral supplements may cause an adverse reaction in some people. The adverse reactions include changes in menstruation, digestive upset, and increased heart rate. If you are allergic to pineapples, you should also avoid bromelain.

Probiotics

Probiotics are live microscopic organisms. They are important to your health, and you have them in your digestive system. Probiotics may be able to help with immune system disorders such as allergies. More research is needed though. Probiotics can be taken in supplement form or from the foods rich in them. Some food sources of probiotics include yogurt, pickles, sour cream, sourdough bread, and kombucha.
