The thought of getting a chemical peel can be daunting and the images circulating online don’t help either. However, many beauty enthusiasts swear by this treatment and the results speak for themselves. It’s a great way to achieve smoother and younger-looking skin by reducing wrinkles and fine lines. It also fades acne scars and dark spots giving you a desirable look. While it sounds like the perfect treatment, things can go horribly wrong leaving you with burnt skin and discolouration. It’s necessary to do your research and find out if a chemical peel is ideal for you. Here are some things you should know before getting a chemical peel.

Consult A Skincare Professional

A chemical peel is a sensitive treatment that can leave you disfigured if something goes wrong. This is why it’s absolutely necessary to consult with a skincare specialist before getting one. The specialist will be able to examine your skin and determine whether the treatment is ideal for you. Additionally, there are a variety of chemical peels including salicylic, lactic, and glycolic peels. A consultation will let you the right peel for you and the care needed after getting one.

Prep Is Key

One of the reasons you may have a bad reaction after getting a chemical peel is that you skipped the preparation process. Before you go in for a peel, make sure you prep your skin. This ensures that your skin is healthy. Use the recommended products for your skin type and avoid products and procedures that may affect your treatment such as waxing or laser hair removal. Also, stop using topical prescription treatments two or three days before the procedure. It’s also recommended to stop taking birth control, acne, and anti-ageing medication.

It’s Not A Miracle Treatment

Some people go for chemical peels expecting that they will cure every skin problem they’re experiencing. This is not the case. Though chemical peels are highly effective, it’s not a miracle treatment and they might not work the same way it does on someone else. It also can’t remove scars that have been there for several years. Your beautician should be able to examine your skin and tell you the best possible outcome from a chemical peel. Signs You Have Sensitive Skin And How To Care For It

You May Experience Irritation And Redness

Chemical peels are tolerable in terms of pain but you may experience slight irritation. You will also notice your new skin becoming temporarily lighter or darker than your normal skin tone. This should only last a few days. You can use a mild moisturizer to soothe the skin or a cold compress to reduce irritation and redness.

Be Realistic

It will take more than one peel to get your desired result. Depending on the level of damage, you’ll need a couple of treatments to clear your skin. This is something many people don’t keep in mind and are disappointed when the peel “doesn’t work.” However, you should notice a difference even on the first treatment. Your skin should look brighter and more youthful than before.

There’s Downtime

Thinking of going out to show off your new transformation? Not quite yet. You’ll have to wait a few days for your skin to heal before you can go about your normal business. The healing process is also quite knurly. Your skin will peel making you look like a reptile shedding its skin. Additionally, you may experience uneven skin tone. It’s advisable to take the week off from your normal schedule to let your skin heal.

Use Sunscreen After Treatment

After getting a chemical peel, your skin will be sensitive to sun exposure. You should avoid prolonged periods in the sun and wear sunscreen when heading out of the house. Additionally, you should wear clothes that give you enough cover from the sun as well as sunglasses. This ensures that the treatment lasts for longer and slows the development of wrinkles in the future. The Benefits Of Sunscreen And How To Apply It Properly
