Nails are an essential part of good grooming, and that’s why almost everyone loves a good manicure. The evolution of gel polish came with many advantages including durability, chip-resistance and variety of colours. You can have gel polish for up to three weeks before it starts to chip off. I don’t know about you, but when it comes to my nails, I prefer consistency. This means that if one nail starts to chip off I will either fix that one nail immediately or get rid of them altogether. The problem is, you may not always have the time and ability to visit a nail parlour to fix them for you, and that’s why you need to learn how to do your own gel manicure. It may even save you the money that you would have spent otherwise by visiting a parlour.

The best thing about this process is that very few tools are required: Acetone and a nail file are the most important. If you have cotton wool and aluminium foil then this will make the process even faster and easier to handle.

Here is how to remove your gel manicure at home.

  1. File your nails

This is the first step. It will fasten the process by getting rid of the first layer of gel polish. However, you are not supposed to file to your natural nail because this could damage it altogether. Gel polish can consist of up to four coats, and you want to remove only the topcoats.

  1. Soak your nails in acetone

There are several ways in which you could do this. It is possible to just soak your nails in a bowl full of acetone, and the gel polish will come off. Another way to do this is to immerse a small piece of acetone in cotton wool and then wrap each nail covered with cotton wool with aluminium foil. This helps to concentrate the acetone and thereby getting rid of the gel polish.

  1. Give it some time

Once you have soaked your nails in acetone, you need to wait and give it time to dissolve. It may take a longer time than you had imagined. When going through this process you won’t be able to do that much with your fingers, so this may be the time to put on your favourite show or movie and watch it. You can also video call a friend. The polish usually peels off easily and without much manipulation.

  1. Finish

Usually, this process takes about 15-30 minutes but it could be longer or shorter. Once you’re done, you might want to wash them properly to get rid of any accumulated dirt, remove your cuticles to enhance growth, and then use an oil of your choice to moisturise the nail beds for faster growth and to maintain the strength of the nails.
