Change is inevitable and we’re currently witnessing a change like no other – climate change. The seasons are shifting, the weather is getting harsher and we’re running around like a headless chicken. It’s a scary phenomenon when August, one of the best holiday months in Kenya, is gloomy and wet. Other crises like famine and drought come with such climate change especially if you’re not adequately prepared. Recently, the United Nations declared a food shortage crisis citing an increase in the number of people facing hunger and starvation. Here are ways you can adapt to climate change and play your part in conserving the environment.

  1. Plant Food Not Grass

Lawns might be beautiful to look at. However, they’re high maintenance as they require to be watered regularly and don’t have any benefits apart from their aesthetics. So, whether you have a water shortage in your area or not, it’s more beneficial to plant trees and food rather than have lawns. You don’t have to give up your beautiful grass, though. You can either downsize it or look for low-water varieties that require two-thirds less water. Check out 5 Great Plants To Grow In Your Kitchen Garden

  1. Power Down Your Electronics

We’re surrounded by electronics from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep. This energy usage is taking a toll on our environment causing drastic climate change. Therefore, it’s important to take some time off electronics especially when you don’t need them. Make sure you power down and use an energy-saving option if available. Additionally, when disposing of old electronics, do it correctly. Check out Managing Electronic Waste For A Safer Environment

  1. Reduce Carbon Emissions

One of the leading causes of the ozone tear is carbon dioxide emission from vehicles. This has become the main mode of transport for the daily commuter. However, there are other eco-friendly options you can try such as train, cycling or walking. Additionally, if you really need to use a vehicle, you can take a bus or carpool with a friend or spouse. When flying, try to pack as light as possible as this reduces the weight thus reducing the fuel consumption.

  1. Use Cleaner Energy

Take advantage of natural resources like solar and wind to power your home. For instance, you can use solar energy to heat water instead of electricity. This saves you a lot of money and, in the long run, saves the planet. You can also switch to energy-saving light bulbs and use appliances that have the Energy Star label on them. Some farmers have switched from firewood to biogas from cow manure to prevent deforestation. Why You Should Consider Using Solar Energy For Your Business and Home Needs

  1. Share More

That little bowl of food you throw out contributes to food shortages in the world. Therefore, try to consume adequately in all areas of your life. Instead of throwing out an expired bag or rice, become more proactive in checking expiry dates then either consume it immediately or give it to someone who needs it. Cultivating a sense of community aids in sharing the resources evenly.

  1. Try A Plant-Based Diet

Another leading cause of climate change is the high demand for meat. The carbon dioxide emitted from large-scale cow farming is a big threat to our ozone layer. Therefore, if fewer people consume meat the demand will reduce thus reducing the threat. It may seem easier said than done. However, you can start by simply giving up meat once a week.
