Kenya Airways and Delta Airlines signed a codeshare agreement effective 11th August. The aim of this agreement is to enhance connectivity. It will also give customers a seamless one-stop travel experience from the United States of America.
Codeshare is a co-operative arrangement whereby airlines carry passengers whose tickets have been issued by another airline. It allows each airline to publish and market the flight under its own designator and flight number.
This move comes right in time to boost Kenya Airways ahead of its inaugural direct flight to New York on the 28th of October 2018.
“Kenya Airways and Delta Airlines are both premier airlines and this agreement is a positive step in our cooperation.” Said Kenya Airways Chief Commercial Officer, Vincent Coste.
Delta Airlines has been in operation in Africa since 2006 and has flights in Lagos, Accra, Dakar and Johannesburg while Kenya Airways is the leading carrier in Africa with operations in over 52 countries, 47 of them in Africa.

“This new partnership with Kenya Airways’ will give customers even greater choice for travel between the continents thanks to Kenya Airways’ extensive network beyond Nairobi,” said Corneel Koster, Delta’s senior vice president for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India.
The agreement states that Delta’s ‘DL’ code will be added on KQ’s flights from Amsterdam, Paris, London and Accra to Nairobi. This will provide customers flying to the United States with a one-stop seamless travel experience from the United States.
It will also place its code on Kenya Airways’ services to more than 10 key cities across Africa including Addis Ababa, Lilongwe, Maputo, Johannesburg, and Djibouti City. This will provide greater options for customers to fly between both continents.
Kenyans and other customers will enjoy connecting flights using a single code. Customers will fly from point A to point C using a single ticket without booking another flight from point B to point C.
Frequent fliers will be able to accrue and redeem mileage on both airlines. Some of Delta Airlines’ frequent flier perks include seat upgrade, Delta Sky Club membership, vacation packages and much more.
Codeshare agreements combine flights with other partner airlines to create a single itinerary to multiple destinations. This synchronizes booking, checking in, checking your bags making travelling more convenient. It also saves time since the coordinated schedules make sure you’ll have enough time for all your connections.
Customers can tell if their flight is a codeshare flight by checking the ticket. The flight information will indicate who the flight is “operated by”. Additionally, the flight numbers will have 4 digits or more as opposed to the usual 3 digits.
