Last week President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the New Terminal 2 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. The terminal was procured, shipped, and installed at a cost of Ksh. 1.7 billion. The terminal sits on 10,000 square meters and is already in use.

The state-of-the-art prefabricated terminal has capacity to handle 2.5 million passengers annually. This will bring JKIA’s capacity to 7.5 million passengers annually, up from the estimated 6.5 million passengers who go through the airport annually. It will handle both international arrivals and departures. Fly 540, Sax, Jubba and African Air Express are some of the airlines that have been operating from the new station.

The acting Managing Director at Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), Yatich Kangugo said that the new terminal will ease congestion at JKIA and deliver a better experience to passengers travelling through the airport. It will also enhance JKIA’s capacity as a gateway into the region.

As part of the expansion and modernization of JKIA, Terminal 3 (formerly Greenfield Terminal) is currently being constructed and it has an annual handling capacity of 20 million passengers. Phase 1 is expected to be complete by 2018. The modernization project is a flagship project of Vision 2030. Terminal 1A which is used exclusively by Kenya Airways and its sky partners was opened last year.
