If you’ve owned the same car for a long period of time, or have just bought one second-hand, you may be thinking about making some tweaks to update its look. Car customisations can be an economical and fun way of improving the aesthetics of your car. What’s more, many of these improvements can be achieved with only a little work and know-how. You will also find that you’ll learn quickly as you go, too. Here are a few introductory ways to make your car stand out.

Paint Jobs

Bold and interesting paint jobs can be a great place to start when customising your vehicle. While it may be fairly time-consuming, it can also be fun, low-risk, and relatively easy to learn. A new coat of paint will instantly improve the aesthetic of your vehicle, and it can even increase the resale value of a car. The first thing you’ll need to do is prepare your car’s frame. This means cleaning off any dirt and residue from the body, and sanding it until the base is smooth. Next, any parts you don’t want to paint should be taped. You should then apply a primer, which helps further smooth your car’s body and helps the paint bond to the vehicle frame. You can then get started on the paintwork. A spray gun is by far the best way to do this, as it is quick and gives an even distribution of the paint.

Try to match the colour you choose to both your style and the uses of your car. Candy paint colours, for example, are great for making your car pop, but dirt is also more visible on them. These styles may thus be suited for vehicles used for more recreational purposes.

Wheels

As they are an often-underappreciated aspect of driving, you may not realise how much difference replacing wheels can make to a car’s appearance. Dirty or damaged wheels, and especially ones missing hubcaps, can make your car look ancient and weathered, even if the rest of it is spotless. A fresh pair of wheels with an interesting spoke alloy, or ones with increased tire size can really make your car stand out. It goes without saying that they will massively increase the comfort and smoothness of your driving experience, too. Wheel replacement is also another custom job that is fairly easy to learn, and there are plenty of guides out there to take you through it, step-by-step. The skills you’ll develop replacing wheels can also be later applied to more complex jobs as you gain more confidence, such as making modifications to engines.

Lighting

Another simple way you can tweak the aesthetics of your car is by modifying its light fittings. Updating the interior light fixtures can be a highly effective way of adding some extra personality to your vehicle, as the standard white light fittings can often be quite harsh. What’s more, this can be done with as little as a screwdriver for removing the original light fitting, and a replacement light fixture. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can even adjust your exterior lighting by adding modified headlights. Tinted headlights, for example, are a popular and eye-catching choice. You may consider consulting with an auto-mechanic first if you’re a beginner, though, as the process of doing this can be quite complex.
