This is probably the farthest thing from your mind but what would you do if you were stuck on Mars? Like legitimately stuck on another planet, a gazillion miles from home by yourself! The Martian is a creatively constructed sci-fi that somehow managed to capture this concept.

A few years back I remember reading an article that told of a program that was going to be launched, in a few years (probably now) where if I recall correctly, NASA was asking for volunteers to apply for a space training program. The program would be training for quite a number of years for those people who are interested in and have the ability to cultivate and survive on Mars. They were going to build domes with oxygen and other items that humans would need to survive inside the domes. It is called the Mars One program and if you want more information check it out here.

Though the idea of exploring mars sounds incredibly exciting, from watching this movie I understand that it is a test of your limits. If you were stuck up there by yourself it would be so much worse! I know sometimes we complain about needing some alone time but a whole planet to yourself is just insane! Humans were created to live in relationship, it’s just who we are.

The Martin starts with a team of astronauts who are sent on a simple, routine trip to Mars. A storm cause complications while they are there and they decide to abort the mission. In all the confusion though, one of their own goes missing. After trying to get in touch with him severally they realize that he has most likely died on the surface due to the compression on his suit caused by the storm. With hearts broken they leave.

One day later Mark Watney, played by the gorgeous Matt Damon with his blued eyes, wakes up alone on a deserted, not island, but planet. He finds his way to the fortitude that was abandoned by the crew and realizes that his survival was short of a miracle. He looks around him and realizing that everything in his makeshift ship is all he has to work with, gets to a point where he decides that he is not going to die on that planet.

It then becomes a battle of will and sheer mind power. The viewer gets to understand what is going on his mind as he records himself almost every day in the astronaut video log on board the ship. I loved his dry humor, wit, and sarcasm. He is able to turn dire situations into just another challenge to face head on.

Damon’s job in The Martian is not an easy one. Watney spends much of his time alone, trying to figure out how he’s going to grow food, make water, traverse long distances, and communicate with the folks back on Earth, and that forces Damon to play out many of his scenes alone, which is no easy task.
The movie is an incredible example of human determination to forge on even between a rock and a hard place. It shows how when you are about to give up, don’t and it will change. I loved towards the end when Watney said,

“When you are in space everything will go completely wrong at some point, everything, literally everything will be against you and you will say this is it. This is how I end. You then have to face one problem, fix it, and then face the next one, fix that one, then the next and the next until you have solved the whole challenge.”
