My friendship with Mark sparked from a not-so-friendly moment. We are both on our school martial arts team and we were paired to spar. I had been keeping my eye on Mark since he was a bit of a show-off and had a tendency to bully other team members. I was waiting for the chance to humble him and the day had finally arrived. Needless to say, Mark’s attitude changed that day and he became my best friend.

However, the competitive spirit never changed between us. We have always found a way of turning everything into a competition. So, when we both caught feelings for the same girl, we made a bet to see who would win her heart.

I know it’s not unusual for best friends to be attracted to the same person. However, I felt like Mark was simply pursuing Lisa because I had a thing for her. I didn’t mind the challenge but I knew things could get complicated and I didn’t want Lisa to be in the middle of it.

“Look at that girl,” I said to him as Lisa walked across the cafeteria.

“She’s very pretty,” Mark commented.

“Back off. She’s mine.”

“Well, I like her too.”

“Okay. Let’s see who wins her over.”

“Okay. Bet.”

Just like that, I was in competition with my best friend over a girl. We both got up and went to where Lisa was seated with her group of friends. I tapped her on the shoulder and she turned.

“Can I talk to you?” I asked.

She looked confused but her friends signaled to her that she could so she got up and we walked a bit further from the table.

“I’m Dan.”

“Okay.”

“I just wanted to tell you I think you’re really pretty.”

“Oh, thanks.” She said sweetly.

“What’s your name?”

“Lisa.”

“Do you study here?” I asked

Mark interrupted us before she could us.

“Hi. I’m Mark.” He said while shaking her hand.

“Hi, Mark. I’m Lisa.” She smiled at him.

I stayed calm though I was a bit nervous about their interaction. Lisa seemed friendlier with Mark than she was with me but I had a few tricks up my sleeve.

“So, do you study here?” I repeated my question.

“Yes, I just joined last week.”

“Oh, nice. I could show you around when you’re free.”

“I’d love that.”

“Can I have your number?”

“Sure.” She said.

I tried not to show how excited I was but it was hard. We went back to our table and I bragged to Mark how I got her number first.

“That’s a win for me.”

“Okay. We’ve just started.”

Little did I know, Mark was looking as she typed her number, memorized it and saved it in his phone. I didn’t see Mark again after we parted ways until the following day and he had a lot to tell me.

“You won’t believe who I was with yesterday?” He said excitedly.

“Who?”

“Lisa.”

“What? How?”

“I asked her out and she agreed. She’s really amazing.” He went on to tell me how his evening was.

“I’m supposed to meet with her in a few minutes.”

“Can I join you?”

“Definitely not.”

Before meeting her, I went to the canteen and bought lots of snacks since I knew I had to outdo whatever Mark had done the previous day.

She met me at the parking lot of the university and we started our tour. At first, she seemed bored so I started telling her stories about legendary moments in the school’s past.

“There’s a student who pooped on a lecturer’s desk because she gave him an F several times.”

She laughed in disbelief. My plan seemed to work. We walked for almost two hours before going back to the cafeteria where I found Mark waiting for me. The two exchanged pleasantries before she left.

“How did it go?”

“Amazing. You know I’m Mr. Charming.”

“Don’t get too confident.”

We kept taking turns spending time with Lisa until she became part of our friend group. She started hanging out with both of us and we invited her everywhere we went. The more time I spent with her, the more my feelings for her grew stronger. However, Mark and I agreed that we couldn’t tell her how we felt until she said who she liked.

It was hard watching the girl I like laughing with another guy and it got harder as time went by since I developed real feelings for her.

Meanwhile, Mark didn’t seem to mind. He actually enjoyed the three-way dates we had and he would plan them regularly. He claimed he was killing two birds with one stone – hanging out with his best friend and courting a beautiful girl.

“Do you even like her?” I finally confronted him.

“To be honest, I was just doing it for fun in the beginning but I’ve fallen in love with her. I hope she chooses me.”

“Keep dreaming. She obviously likes me more. I’m more mature, funnier, more handsome…”

“Ha!! You wish. We’ll see who she chooses.”

The bet went on for nearly a year until we got tired of trying to win her over. We had already done everything we could to impress and it was up to her to make a decision. However, Lisa didn’t seem too keen on choosing either of us.

I don’t know whether she’s not interested in any of us or she doesn’t know that we’re interested in her. Either way, we’re all in an awkward position. I was hoping that Mike would be a respectable man and back down so I could finally tell Lisa my true feelings but he insists that we have to stick to the bet.

I’m willing to lose the bet but things have become so complicated that I don’t think it’s a good idea for either of us to date Lisa. If I end up with her, Mike wouldn’t be happy about it and if she ends up with Mike, I wouldn’t be happy about it. I don’t want to lose my best friend even though Lisa is worth losing a best friend for.

The best outcome would be if Lisa started dating a different guy. I’m considering setting her up with someone else so the bet can come to an end.
