The Singlehood Series: He Arranged For A First Date Outside Our City Without Checking With Me First

I didn’t ask where we were going because I assumed he was taking me on a lunch date.

First dates are always exciting because you don’t know what to expect. The date could turn out to be the best or the worst that you’ve ever been on so you always have to be prepared for anything. However, it’s hard to expect that someone will take you on a road trip for a first date. It’s sort of an unspoken rule that the first date should be within the same area that you live in.

I’m always up for an adventure which is probably why I end up in situations that I shouldn’t be in. I’d rather know what would happen if I did something than regret not doing it. Most times, it’s just harmless fun but there are times I have been in trouble. One of those times was when a person I barely knew took me to a different city on the first date.

I should have known that Barry couldn’t be trusted from the moment I met him. There was something suspicious about him but I ignored my gut feeling and took the bait.

I was casually walking in town when Barry and I crossed paths. He looked familiar and it turned out he also thought I looked familiar. So, we both stopped to confirm whether we knew each other.

“Hi. You look familiar.” I said but after taking a closer look I realized that I didn’t recognize him.

“You too. Where have we met?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Where do you live?”

“Kasarani.”

“Oh yes, I must have seen you there. I usually visit those sides a lot.”

“Okay.” I answered knowing that we didn’t meet there because I barely leave my house unless I’m going to a specific place.

“I’m Barry.”

“Kate.”

“Where are you headed?”

“To work.”

“What kind of work starts at midday?”

“I had a meeting with a client but I’m going back to the office now. What about you?”

“I have a business in town. I was in a meeting too.”

“Okay. I’m somehow in a rush but we should keep in touch.”

“Of course. Do you have an Instagram?”

“Yes.” I said then gave him my account handle.

He followed me and liked most of my pictures on Instagram while I was still waiting to board a bus at the bus station.

His Instagram page was quite interesting. He looked like he travelled a lot and liked an adventure. We had a lot in common so it was easy for me to go along with whatever he wanted.

“I see you like to travel,” I said.

“Yeah, we should go on a road trip soon.”

“Sure.”

“I’m planning on going soon. I’ll let you know when so you can free up your time.”

“Okay. We should go on a first date, though.”

“Why can’t we do both?” He asked.

I laughed because it sounded absurd. I might be an adventure lover but I wouldn’t be comfortable with going on a road trip for a first date. Barry thought otherwise.

“Let’s meet this weekend,” I suggested it since I was eager to know him more.

We agreed and he even offered to pick me up from my place.

Since we had planned a casual date, I wore a tank top, jeans, a baseball hat and a pair of sneakers. I got in his car and he started driving towards Mombasa Road. I didn’t think it was necessary to ask him where we were going. However, we passed most of the major restaurants and hotels along Mombasa Road which made me a bit nervous.

I kept looking behind as if to signal to Barry that we had passed the main hotels and restaurant.

“We aren’t there yet.” He said, after seeing that I was uneasy.

I felt a bit calmer and we continued chatting as he drove. Three hours later, we were still on the road. We were in the middle of nowhere and I got anxious again. That time, I spoke up.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“You’ll see.”

“I need to know right now because we’ve been driving the whole day and I’m getting worried.”

“Don’t you trust me?”

“I don’t know you. This is our first date and you’ve driven me out of town.”

“I thought you were adventurous.”

“I’m adventurous, not foolish. Where are we going?”

“We’re going camping.”

“What? I didn’t say I wanted to go camping.”

“It was supposed to be a surprise but you ruined it.”

“I can’t sleep in the same tent as you.”

“Relax. I paid for separate tents.”

I was quiet as we drove deeper into the darkness. When I saw a light at a distance, I perked up. At least I knew he wasn’t going to harm me and if he did I could get help nearby.

The light kept getting closer and closer until we stopped at a gate. The security took our names and ID numbers and then let us in. I’ve never been that relieved to reach any destination.

They showed us to our tents and gave us a schedule for the days we would be staying there. The following day, I bought a few clothes from a boutique at the campsite.

It turned out to be a great trip. We went to Amboseli National Park which I hadn’t been to before and the camp was really good.

However, I still didn’t like going on a road trip with a stranger. I had to be on my best behaviour in case he had a temper. Luckily, he didn’t try to sleep with me. He was actually very respectful.

We drove back to Nairobi in awkward silence. He tried to ask me out on another date which I politely declined. I didn’t want to know where he would take me next if he could drive me out of town on the first date.

When I got back home, I looked around as if I wasn’t sure where I was. It felt like I was dreaming since I was prepared for the worst. I blocked Barry immediately and hoped I never ran into him again.
