The Singlehood Series: She Broke Up With Me After I Travelled Abroad To Visit Her

I hadn't even finished unpacking my bags when she ended the relationship.

Sometimes, it can be a good thing to go above and beyond to prove your love to someone but you can also end up making grand gestures for someone who doesn’t appreciate your efforts. My love for Candy made me do some things that I regret to this day. I travelled abroad to visit her only for her to break up with me because I was suffocating her.

Candy was my everything and I mean that in the literal sense. I didn’t have many friends and hardly got along with my family members. During one of our school trips, I met her and had an instant connection. I thought she was way out of my league but one of the few school friends I had encouraged me to talk to her so I hyped myself up and approached her. She was really nice which took me by surprise. Most girls that I had tried to talk to in the past were rude and dismissed me. Yet, Candy, one of the most beautiful girls I had ever seen, was not only talking to me but also smiling and laughing at my jokes.

I was happy to learn that she didn’t live far from me so we made plans to meet when schools closed. We talked the whole day until it was time to go back to our respective schools.

I couldn’t wait to see her schools closed. As soon as I got home, I called her to ask her if we could meet the following day.

“Sure. I don’t have any plans.” She responded.

“Okay. I’ll come to your neighbourhood around 11 am.”

“That’s fine.”

As I said, I didn’t have many friends and didn’t get along with my family so Candy was one of the few people I could talk to. The more we hung out, the more I opened up and felt comfortable around her. By the end of the school break, I had transformed into a confident and social person thanks to her.

“You’ve changed so much, Dan. What happened?” One of my schoolmates asked.

“Nothing. I just grew up.”

“I heard you have a girlfriend in St George’s.” He said then laughed.

“She’s not my girlfriend. We’re just friends.”

“You should ask her or someone else will.”

At the time, I thought it was ridiculous to ask Candy if she could be my girlfriend but when we finished school, I decided to take the leap. She agreed to be my girlfriend and our friendship blossomed into a budding relationship.

However, we didn’t spend as much time together as I would like. Candy was always busy applying for scholarships to study abroad and planning the next chapter of her life. I, on the other hand, spent most of the day in my room watching YouTube videos.

It was Candy who made me realize that I was wasting my time and encouraged me to also apply for university scholarships. Since my parents didn’t support me financially, I also decided to look for jobs so I could make money.

Things started looking good again. I got a well-paying online job and I could spend my days with Candy helping her apply for scholarships.

After a year of sending applications and getting rejected, she finally got some good news. She was accepted to a university in Canada and also got a scholarship. I was so happy for her but I also realized that I wouldn’t see her for years once she left.

By that time, my dependence on Candy was a bit unhealthy. Whenever I didn’t see her, I felt physically sick so I wondered how I would survive when she left to study abroad.

However, I didn’t want to make her feel bad so I kept my feelings to myself. The day before she left, I finally opened up to her about how I was feeling.

“What will happen to us when you travel abroad? Are we going to still be a couple?” I asked.

“Of course. Why not?” She answered.

I was relieved though I knew in the back of my mind it wasn’t true. Most long-distance relationships are difficult to maintain and Candy wouldn’t have trouble finding someone who was better than me. Nonetheless, I chose to believe her words.

We bid each other farewell and she left the following day. I didn’t have a way to contact her apart from social media which she didn’t use that much. I stayed for two weeks without talking to her and not knowing what she was doing, which made me realize that I wouldn’t be able to live like that.

After we talked, I informed her that I wanted to visit her.

“It’s too soon. I haven’t even settled in.” She explained.

“I don’t care. I just want to see you.”

“You’re just wasting your time and money.”

“Seeing you isn’t a waste of time or money.”

“Fine. It will probably take you a couple of months to get the visa anyway.”

As expected, it did take me two months to get a visa to travel abroad. I started packing as soon as I got the email from the embassy and a week after, I had left the country.

Candy picked me up from the airport but she didn’t look as enthusiastic as I was.

“How’s school?” I asked, trying to start a conversation.

“It’s fine.” She answered coldly.

“I brought you some stuff from home.”

“Thanks.”

We got to the hotel room and I couldn’t wait to unwind after the long flight. As I was unpacking, Candy came up to me with a sad look on her face.

“I don’t think I can do this.” She said.

“Do what?”

“This relationship. I don’t want to be in a relationship with you anymore.”

I was dumbfounded. For a moment, I stood still while holding my suitcase.

“I just flew for 15 hours and you can’t even wait a day to break up with me.”

“I appreciate the effort but you’re too much. We haven’t even been apart for more than three months and you’re already flying to see me.”

“That’s how much I love you.”

“It’s too much. You’re suffocating me. I need to focus on my future yet I’m constantly worrying about how you’re doing.”

No matter how I tried to show her that everything I did was because I loved her, she didn’t want to hear any of it. She left me in the hotel room and went to her apartment. I never saw her or heard from her again. Since I had booked a week-long stay at the hotel and was now single, I had nothing to do. I stayed in my hotel room ordering food and watching TV for the whole week then went back home feeling like a defeated animal.

When people asked how the trip went, I told them that it was fine. I never told anyone that Candy had broken up with me and for years, they thought we were still together. It was only recently when she posted her engagement pictures that they confronted me about it and I told them the truth. I still believe that Candy and I were meant for each other and that one day, we’ll be together again.
