Everyone thinks that tragedy can never befall them. We always think “It can never be me” or “How unlucky am I for something like that to happen to me?”. Well, tragedy doesn’t know luck. It just happens and it happens when you least expect it. I didn’t expect that my girlfriend would die during a vacation with friends. However, it was the way she died that shocked me the most.
Lydia was my dream girl. I knew shortly after I met her that I would settle down with her and make her my wife. She felt the same way about me. We loved each other deeply and had one of the best relationships I’ve ever experienced.
Lydia loved to travel and one of her favourite destinations was Mexico. We lived near the border which made it easy for us to go any time we wanted. However, it had been some time since we went because there had been reports of tourists getting kidnapped in Mexico.
“Have you seen these reports about Mexico?” She asked, showing me a post on social media.
“Yes, I heard about missing tourists in the news,” I answered.
“That’s so scary. We always go to Mexico.”
“I know. We might need to take a break for a while.”
After some months went by, Lydia suggested that we should go. I was still a bit skeptical but we hadn’t heard any more reports and she was adamant. So, I gave in and asked some of my friends to join us. She also asked her friends to come along and we were excited about the trip. They came over to my place and we drove to Mexico as a group.
Things were looking good so far. We were having a great time. We hadn’t been to our favourite destination in a while so we had missed that feeling of letting loose and having some fun in the sun.
The following day, we all headed to another bar outside of our hotel where we could enjoy some tacos and tequila shots. Again, the vibes were immaculate at this place. The music was good, the people were friendly and were all having a good time.
We broke off into smaller friend groups since everyone wanted to do something different. Some people were playing pool, others were chatting and others were on the dance floor. I was playing pool and the last time I checked, Lydia was at the bar counter with another friend.
Once I finished my game, I went back to the counter to check on Lydia and the other girls. However, Lydia wasn’t there.
“Where’s Lydia?”
“She went to the bathroom but she’s been gone for a few minutes.” Her friend explained.
I didn’t think anything was wrong at that moment but when a few more minutes passed, I started to feel uneasy.
“Let’s go check on her,” I said to her friend.
We went to the ladies’ bathroom then her friend went in to look for Lydia. She came out with a worried look on her face and I knew that something was wrong.
“She’s not in here.”
I headed to the counter to ask the bartender if he had seen her but he hadn’t. Nobody had – not the waiters or the security guard. Our dream vacation started to turn into a nightmare.
We spent the rest of the evening looking for her then finally, we headed to the police station to report her missing.
“Okay, we will send a team to look for her.” They told us.
However, we couldn’t just sit in our hotel rooms and do nothing while waiting for them to tell us what was happening. We continued looking for her everywhere we could think of within the area she went missing. However, no one had seen her. I thought it was strange that she had just vanished but I didn’t want to assume the worst.
After two days of searching, we didn’t find her and our vacation had come to an end.
“What do we do?” One of my friends asked.
“We have to go back. We’ve looked for her for two days and haven’t found her. There’s nothing much we can do. I’ll keep following up with the police when I get home.” I said.
Reluctantly, we packed our bags, checked out of the hotel and drove to the border so we could go back home. While we were waiting in traffic to cross the border, I noticed a familiar face in a car near us. It was Lydia.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like I was seeing a ghost. I tried to get her attention but I didn’t want to get out of the car and cause a scene.
“Is that Lydia?” One of my friends asked.
“Yes,” I answered excitedly.
I kept trying to get her attention but nothing worked. Then, I noticed that she was motionless. She was seated upright but her head hadn’t moved for minutes. I thought it was odd and decided to alert the border patrol about it.
They came to the vehicle and removed everyone inside including Lydia. However, Lydia was deceased. She had been placed in the car to look like she was sleeping but she wasn’t alive. Additionally, the police found drugs inside her body. Her insides had been removed and replaced with drugs so they could be moved across the border without any suspicion.
I was in extreme shock. Though I had my fears, this was the last thing I expected to happen while on vacation. I never thought it could get to such extremes. It was scary to think that we were in the same place with the person or people who did that to Lydia.
I’ve never gone back to Mexico and I don’t think I ever will. I not only lost the love of my life there but also she was brutally murdered. It’s still traumatizing to think about it to this day but I try to keep my head up and carry on with my life.
