Many move abroad in search of greener pastures only to realize that the grass isn’t greener on the other side. While it’s exciting, starting a new life in a new country, especially as an adult, can alter your life in ways that you may not be prepared for.  For some, these hurdles outweigh the benefits making it challenging to adjust to the new environment. Whether you’re considering relocating abroad to pursue an education or earn a living, it’s necessary to be aware of the challenges people face so you can make an informed decision. Here are some challenges people face after relocating abroad.

  1. Culture Shock

One of the most common challenges that people face after relocating abroad is culture shock. This is a feeling of anxiety and confusion as a result of moving to a different city or country and being cut off from the norms and cultures that you’re used to. Culture shock can be intense and some people struggle to overcome it and adopt the new culture. It can cause depression, paranoia, frustration and fatigue which has led many to have an unpleasant experience while in a new country.

  1. Making Friends

Do you know it’s harder to make new friends as you get older? Now, can you imagine being in a foreign country, with no friends and struggling to make new ones? It can be a daunting experience and unfortunately, it happens to many people who relocate abroad. Going for long periods without social interactions can be detrimental to your mental health making it harder to adjust to your new life. If you find it hard to make new friends, try joining online groups for foreigners living abroad and clubs centred around your hobbies. 15 Types Of Friends We All Have. What Role Do You Play In Your Circle of Friends?

  1. Language Barrier

Don’t take the challenges that language barriers can pose for granted. Many people assume that they will be able to communicate with the help of translation apps and then learn the language slowly while they’re in the new country. However, most locals aren’t patient to wait for you to translate what you want. It also gives the wrong impression if you can’t say even the simplest phrases in the local dialect. To avoid such inconveniences, try to learn a few important phrases before relocating abroad. 5 Advantages Of Learning A New Language

  1. Technology Gap

Most people relocate to a country that is more technologically advanced than their country of origin which can pose many challenges at work, school or home. With the rapid advancements in technology, some countries have devices that many thought they would never see in their lifetime. Some are so complex that some people find it difficult to use such devices. However, if you’re flexible and willing to learn, you should be able to catch up easily.

  1. Home Sickness

It takes courage, patience and a bit of luck to move to another country and settle in well. The fact that everything is so new and foreign will rock your boat and make you feel homesick. This is something that you can’t avoid whether you have family and friends in the new country or not. You will have to find something that encourages you to socialize and create your own identity in the new place to starve off feelings of loneliness.

  1. Family Strains

Family support is crucial to make the relocation process less stressful. However, everyone will not support you when you relocate abroad. Even the ones who support you may find it difficult to adjust once you leave. This can lead to family strains. Make sure that you stay in contact with your family to keep your bond strong. It’s recommended to have a daily conversation in the first month after relocating abroad.

  1. Money Management

When you’re thousands of kilometres away from home, managing your money well is paramount. Some are lucky to have someone to guide them and help them budget their income when they arrive in the new country. However, others aren’t that lucky and have to figure things out on their own. Without good money management skills, it’s easy to get swept up by the excitement of being in a new country and blow all your money on unnecessary things. 7 Budget Cut Ideas For Those Trying To Save More Money
