For many people, fashion is a utility. People only wear specific clothes depending on the occasion. However, whether it’s an office setting or attending an event, the clothes chosen say a lot about your personality. Clothing is a social signal about who you are. They’re an important way of expression. Costume designers use clothing to describe a character; the same can be said of real life.

Culture also determines a lot about fashion. Studies show that women can use clothing to disguise their bodies to reflect a specific body image. In addition, women who dressed more fashion-forward or individualistic were more open to experiences. Women selecting clothes less suited to being casual or minimalist helped them overcome objectification.

What do your fashion choices say about you?

There are plenty of styles and fusions that many people apply to how they dress every day. They are described using terms like professional, edgy, casual, mature, understated, luxury, or unbothered. People observing your style will get their cues from the colours chosen, whether they’re high-end labels, vintage, modern, chic, the accessories paired, or the patterns. For example, if you mix floral prints, people may assume you’re bubbly. If you like dull browns and understated colours with tweed, people can assume you’re into the dark academia aesthetic. Free-flowing dresses with sandals and earthy tones can give off a bohemian vibe.

The colours you choose can also reflect your mood. Wearing navy blue jeans, sneakers, and a black T-shirt can show you feel relaxed and casual. When shopping for clothes, your needs, personality, and mood determine your purchase.

Clothes are a great way to give a specific first impression. They can speak to your intent, confidence or your capabilities.

1. Colour

While most people don’t take fashion too seriously, certain colours can still give unconscious impressions to the wearer and the people who get to see the clothes. Blue shows tranquillity, red shows passion, yellow is a happy colour, black shows mystery, purple shows luxury, etc.

Some colours are also better suited to formal settings. Brown, navy blue, black, and other dim colours are seen as more official. For a pop of colour and personality, wear a paisley shirt the same colour as your suit. Jangly accessories, a bulky scarf, or bulky shoes can reduce formality.

2. Fabric

Loose fabrics show a party vibe. For example, light linen suits and beach wear, while capri pants are great for a casual outing or a safari. Pastels are great for church or picnics and show that you are in a semi-formal setting. Jeans speak to casual comfort but can be elevated with an elaborate top, dress shoes, and great jewellery.

People with edgy personalities or fashion tastes prefer maximalist fashion. For example, wear a deep red velvet skirt with ripped fishnets, oversized knee-length boots, and a denim top. A personality that prefers excess also likes extravagant fabrics. Layering is also a popular option to appear bold and daring.

3. Texture

While the texture is mostly determined based on practicality, some textures show personality. If you wear tweed, you likely want to look academic or mature. Pairing tweed with polyester dress slacks can show a fun, smart casual look. A classic cotton skirt suit with pearls and kitten heels looks like discreet royalty. Shiny textures can show a vibrant personality, while poofy outfits can show that you intend to take up space.

4. Fit

Most people wear clothes that fit them as close as possible. However, different fits can suit different personalities. Wearing an oversize trench coat can make you look extra. Baggy jeans paired with a tight top are a great way for women with a pear shape to flatter their figure. Wearing clothes that expose the decolletage, the belly, or a high slit shows very high confidence.

When wearing clothes suited to your figure, your gait and posture change. The fit of the clothes can go a great way in improving self-confidence. Studies show that men who wear tailored suits were better at negotiations than men wearing sweatpants. Suits exude more dominance and less compromise, reducing the risk of being lowballed.
