When I say I’ve been down bad, I mean it. Nothing compares to the humiliation of finding out that the man you have been bragging about for months is actually a high school boy. I’ve always wanted a picture-perfect relationship but I was never lucky in that department. Even basic relationships were hard to come by for me. However, Michael changed all of that.

I had been living in my new place for two months and hadn’t made any friends. So, when the management announced they were hosting a party on the rooftop, I knew it was my opportunity to meet a few of my neighbours. The night went better than I expected. I made a lot of friends and we had a lot of fun. Towards the end of the night, two guys approached me and introduced themselves. I must have been very drunk because I thought they were twins.

“Are you twins?” I asked them.

Before they could answer, I pulled one of my friends and started telling him that they were twins. We talked briefly with one of the guys and he took my number. The following day, as I nursed a hangover, the guy called me.

“Where are you?” He asked.

“Who is this?”

“It’s Kim. We met last night.”

I had met so many people that night that it didn’t hit me that it was one of the twins.

“Oh. Okay. I’m at my place.” I answered.

“Could you come to the rooftop?”

“Sure. Let me get ready and come.”

I prepared myself hurriedly and then went to meet him. Memories of the previous night came back as soon as I saw him. He looked more handsome than I remembered. I smiled to myself as I walked towards him and he stood up to hug me. The rooftop was empty which was a stark contrast to how it looked the previous night.

We talked for almost two hours before the afternoon heat got to me.

“I need to go back to my place. I’m not feeling well.”

“Okay. Let me take you.”

I invited him in and offered him a glass of juice to cool off. Then, he tried to make a move on me. The whole encounter felt like the beginning of the picture-perfect relationship I always dreamt of and I didn’t want to ruin it by sleeping with him. So, we just cuddled and he left later that day.

Our friendship blossomed really fast. He introduced me to some of his friends who lived in the same apartment and I used to hang out with them almost every day. Nothing would have made me think that they were in high school. They partied and drank from morning to night. Additionally, they lived alone.

Two weeks after meeting him, we became an official couple. His friends knew that I was his girlfriend. He also used to sleep at my place regularly. He would even buy lunch for me almost every day which I thought was really sweet since no one had shown me that kind of care.

However, when I introduced him to my friends, they were immediately sceptical.

“How old is he?” One of them asked.

“23 years. I don’t know.”

“He looks like he’s in high school.”

I laughed because I thought they were joking. Michael had a full beard and deep bass. I didn’t know any high school boys who looked like him. Looking back, however, they probably saw something that I didn’t see.

Their comments may have seemed ridiculous at the moment but I kept replaying them in my mind. After a month, Michael told me that he was travelling to Uganda for a few months for work.

“I’ll be back in August.” He said.

I didn’t think much about it since he had told me that he worked on contracts. He left a few days later but we kept in touch over the phone. His friends also had left. I stopped seeing them around the apartment and I became lonely.

Just like the first time, I decided to go back to the rooftop to meet a new group of friends. Sure enough, I made some new friends. These ones were more mature than the other group but they were still partyholics. During one of our usual hangouts, one of the guys asked if I was single but I told him I was dating someone.

Since we were talking about my boyfriend, I wanted to know if they knew him. To my surprise, they all knew him. After describing him, everyone said they knew him.

“How do you know Mike?” I asked.

“I don’t know much about him but I heard rumours that he was in high school.” One of the girls said. “He tried to hit on my friend then she found out he was still in high school.”

Again, the high school thing came up which made me think that it was more than just a rumour. I laughed off the story but I couldn’t hide my shock. That evening, I went back to my place and started to check the belongings that Mike had hoping to find something that would let me know whether he was in high school.

I found a receipt in one of his pockets. It was a school fees receipt from a high school which had his name on it. That receipt confirmed the rumours and what my friends tried to warn me about. However, I couldn’t tell anyone about it. It was the most humiliating experience I had ever been through and sharing it would only make things worse.

Instead, I simply told them that we had broken up because he was too busy and I couldn’t do the long-distance relationship thing. In reality, I would still be in that relationship to this day if I hadn’t found that receipt. I believed the fantasy and wanted to live in that world but as much as I wanted a relationship, dating a high school boy was a new low, even for me.
