Plants are a great way to bring the outdoors inside, raise the energy of a room and fill up those spaces we don’t know what to do with. They’re also great for aesthetics but many people still shy away from adding plants to their space for one major reason. They require some kind of maintenance.  Unlike other décor pieces, plants need care for them to look healthy and to keep them alive. A common mistake people make is rushing to buy any plant they see without knowing how to care for it. The reality is plants aren’t that hard to look after if you know their requirements. Additionally, there are lots of beginner-friendly plants that won’t easily die on you. Here are some low-maintenance plants you can add to your space.

  1. Snake Plant

Unfortunately, we’re not all good at taking care of plants even when we know all about them. One plant that is nearly impossible to kill is the snake plant. This plant is the definition of low maintenance. It hardly needs any water and requires very little sunlight making it perfect for people who have a busy schedule or can’t take care of a plant to save their lives. Apart from their low-maintenance qualities, snake plants are beloved for another reason. They have some health benefits. They are known to detoxify the air. 8 Ways To Make Your House Smell Heavenly

Care Guide

It thrives in warm weather and struggles in cold conditions. Only water the plant if the soil feels dry. It can last for up to two months without water in cold weather. In warmer weather, it can last about two weeks. It prefers indirect but steady sunlight. It is prone to insect attacks if it suffers from environmental issues like humidity and incorrect water levels.

  1. Spider Plant

If you love palm trees but can’t take care of one, you should consider getting a spider plant. They share a lot of physical similarities but the spider plant is much easier to take care of than the palm tree. Due to their small nature, spider plants make great tabletop plants.  They also make a statement and create an interesting focal point. Not to mention, they have air-purifying properties as well.

Care Guide

Spider plants are among the most adaptable house plants. They can be placed in low to indirect bright light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves — water when the soil is 50 to 75% dry. If the tips of the leaves are dry, it means they’re under-watered. If they’re dark brown, it means they’re overwatered. They do well under humid conditions so mist the leaves regularly if you leave in a dry area.

  1. Rubber Plant

Big plants are beautiful to look at and fill up empty spaces well. However, most of them require a lot of care which discourages many newbie plant lovers from getting one. The rubber plant is one of the few big plants that are also low maintenance. This plant can reach staggering heights within a few years and boasts shiny, beautiful leaves. It’s a beautiful plant that won’t disappoint you.

Care Guide

Rubber plants thrive in well-lit, indirect sunlight. When they’re growing, they love water but dislike dump roots. Therefore, you should only water them when the soil is dry and don’t let the plant remain in the water. If there’s water in the dip tray after 30 minutes, pour it out. They also do well in low humidity. However, if it’s too dry, you should mist the leaves from time to time.

  1. Aloe Vera

This succulent has been around for thousands of years and was used for medicinal purposes to heal scars and treat skin conditions. Today, it has become a popular houseplant as it is easy to maintain and it adds a beautiful aesthetic to any space. Being a succulent, it is very easy to take care of this plant as it is drought tolerant. 5 Benefits Of Aloe Vera Gel

Care Guide

Aloe Vera plants need plenty of sunlight, minimal regular watering, and warm temperatures. They need direct and bright sunlight. Though it requires minimal watering, lack of proper watering will shorten its lifespan. You should water thoroughly, let it drain then water again with the top layer of soil dries. Make sure that you don’t overwater this plant as this is a common mistake that people make.

  1. Chinese Money Plant

The Chinese money plant is a relatively small plant that is best suited for indoors. It has stunning round leaves that are sure to catch anybody’s attention. Despite its beauty and low maintenance requirements, this plant only recently started gaining worldwide popularity. However, you can find it in some plant shops. It was given the name Chinese money plant as it originates from China and it is also believed to bring good luck, fortune, and wealth according to Chinese Feng Shui.

Care Guide

It grows well in indirect bright light, well-draining soil, and high humidity. One of the most critical parts of caring for the Chinese money plant is watering. Keep the soil moist but not dump and the humidity levels should be at least 50%. Therefore, you need to mist the leaves regularly if you live in a dry area. The Chinese money plant can withstand a little drought. So, when you’re in doubt, it’s best to leave it alone for a while than over-watering it.
