As a parent, you do everything you can to ensure your child is healthy. Pediatric dentistry is vital to maintaining your child’s overall health, but many children fear the dentist. Fortunately, if you mix a bit of patience with the tips listed here, you’ll be able to create a stress-free dentist visit for your child.

Determine what they’re afraid of

There are many reasons your child might be fearful of the dentist. Common fears are being unable to breathe, feeling helpless, or noisy tools. Understanding what your child fears will help address their concerns more thoroughly. Then, you can use that knowledge to walk them through the procedure ahead of time to prepare them for a visit.

Schedule regular checkups

Dental care is a vital aspect of your child’s overall health. Regular checkups will help your child get used to visiting the dentist. Not only will they become more familiar with the office, but they’ll understand the procedures better, too. Familiarity breeds comfort, so it’s essential your child becomes acclimated to regular visits.

Vet your dentist thoroughly

Perhaps the most important thing to do when choosing a dentist is research. Speak with other parents in the area to find a pediatric dentist who treats children with respect and a gentle touch. Often, choosing a pediatric dentist instead of family practice will make your child more comfortable. Most pediatric offices are outfitted with toys and televisions to make children comfortable.

Set the right example

Setting a positive example is a critical aspect of being a good parent. Going to the dentist is one way to set that example. Consider bringing your child with you to a few of your dental visits before they have their own. They’ll be able to see how the dentist performs their tasks and how easy it is for you to remain calm, despite the pointy, noisy tools.

Stay close during the visit

No matter your child’s age, they should always feel cared for and supported by the dentist. When it comes time for them to go to their regular checkup, be sure to stick close once they climb into that chair. They’ll feel much more confident if they know you’re nearby and ready to hold their hand.

Always see the same hygienist

Another effective way to help your child acclimate to the dentist is to book each visit with the same hygienist. Your child will be able to anticipate a familiar face during their visit. Even better, the hygienist will be able to learn about your child and understand their fears. When you and the medical staff are on the same page, keeping your child calm will be easier.

Wrapping up

For many children, a dentist’s office is a scary place. As a parent, you want to do everything you can to make sure your kids feel safe and cared for. Using the tips listed here, you’ll be able to help your child ease into their dental visit and come out feeling stronger than ever.
