Flying with a toddler can be daunting not only for the parents but also for everyone on board. Toddlers are super active and if you fail to contain them, they will run wild on the plane. However, you shouldn’t cringe at the thought of flying with your little one since it’s meant to be a special experience. They’re seeing a new side of the world and making memories with you. Therefore, it should be as pleasant for you as it is for them.

Most parents try their best to keep their toddlers safe and entertained during a flight but still find themselves having to run after their little ones every now and then. While it’s absolutely normal for toddlers to want to explore their new environment, there are certain recommendations parents should be aware of to make their flight less stressful. Here are some.

Get To The Airport Early

There’s nothing as bad as rushing to board a flight with a toddler. This increases your stress levels since you have to ensure you make it in time with a child in tow. When you’re stressed, you’re more likely to get easily agitated which makes it hard to comfort your child when they’re restless. Try to get to the airport at least 1 hour to two hours before your flight to avoid the last-minute rush. This also gives you plenty of time to make sure your toddler is comfortable.

Bring Pillows And A Blanket For Them

Sleeping on a plane is hard enough for adults. Imagine how hard it is for your toddler. If you can, bring a toddler car seat for them since it’s more comfortable. However, if this isn’t ideal (or possible for you, you can bring some pillows and a blanket to create a makeshift bed for your little one. Increasing their comfort level will help them sleep easily thus reducing tantrums and restlessness.

Feed Your Toddler During Take-Off And Landing

One of the reasons toddlers become grumpy during flights is because they’re hungry. Ensure that you feed them before the flight and always have their favourite snacks during the flight in case they get hungry.

Experts also recommend that feeding them during take-off and landing can reduce the atmospheric pressure thus making them feel more at ease. If they’re very young, you can bring a pacifier to suck when they get fussy.

Book Morning Flights

Many parents make the mistake of booking evening flights with the hope that their toddler will sleep on the plane. However, this isn’t a guarantee. In fact, it’s most likely not going to happen since there are many distractions on the plane. Morning flights are ideal since your child is well-rested and happiest in the morning. Though you’ll have to keep them entertained throughout the flight, they are less likely to throw tantrums at this time. 6 Games That You Can Play On A Family Vacation

Build Excitement

Turn your flight day into an adventure for your toddler. If they’re excited about the flight, they are less likely to get agitated. Talk to them days before the flight and make it seem exciting. You can tell them a fictional story about flying or your personal experience so they see that they have nothing to worry about. On the day of the flight, try to make the day more special. For instance, you can have a nicer meal, download interesting kids’ apps or buy a nice book or toy for them.

Pack Medication

The change in air pressure can put a lot of strain on your toddler’s body making them fall sick. Ensure that you consult your paediatrician before flying to check whether your toddler is in good health. If not, try to avoid flying. However, if it’s unavoidable, pack proper medication so your toddler feels better as soon as possible. You should also pack basic medication for colds and infections especially if your child is prone to sickness.
