Homeschooling your child might be the best or worst decision you make as a parent. Many mothers are still hesitant about doing it since it’s a fairly new concept and there isn’t much to refer to in terms of its success. Additionally, there’s no denying that homeschooling has its fair share of hardships which most people worry about. However, it could turn out to be the best experience for you and your child. Here are some pros and cons of homeschooling your child.

Pros

  1. Builds A Closer Parent-Child Relationship

By homeschooling your children, you get to see them all day. You learn more about their personality thus strengthening your relationship with them. With ordinary schooling, the only time you spend time with your children is in the evenings and early morning.

  1. Teach Your Own Values

The world is full of different ideas yet, until this day, most schools teach the same old narrative. Since you are your child’s teacher, you can choose which values to instill in them. For instance, you can teach them about different religious teachings and not just Christianity as most schools do. There are endless materials for it, thanks to the internet.

  1. Create Your Own Schedule

You don’t have to rely on someone else’s timetable when homeschooling. You plan your week based on your suitability which provides you with ample time to do your own thing and still spend quality time with your child.

  1. Flexible Dress Code

Homeschooling lifts the burden of buying expensive school uniform. Your child can wear their home clothes. However, ensure that they still take a shower and change out of their pajamas as this is a crucial step in starting the day.

  1. Explore Your Child’s Talents

With homeschooling, you can enroll your child in different extra-curriculum activities and find out which ones they like the most. Most regular schools don’t offer a variety of extra-curriculum activities thus hindering the child from nurturing their talent.

Cons

  1. Expensive

If you’re getting into homeschooling to save money, you got it wrong. For starters, one parent has to be a stay-at-home-parent full time which means that’s one less paycheck. Additionally, you have to buy all the stationery, textbooks and tools needed for their curriculum. In the end, you spend more money than a regular school.

  1. Criticism

Be prepared to face criticism if you choose to homeschool your child. Since it’s not the mainstream way, many people will have an opinion about it. Keep a level head and instead of fighting back maybe you should educate them on some of the benefits of homeschooling.

  1. Time Consuming

You need to be fully dedicated for homeschooling to work. That means you have to commit a lot of your time to teaching your child. It only gets more hectic when the number of children increases. Therefore, you should really exercise your time management skills so as to also find time for yourself.

  1. Lack Of Facilities

It becomes challenging once your child gets to the age where they need to do experiments and other things that require certain equipment. in regular schools, these facilities are easily available making it a conducive learning environment.

  1. Socialization

There’s no doubt that homeschooling may affect your child’s social skills. After all, they spend the whole day with you. Make sure you encourage play time as well to make them more social. You can organize play dates with other homeschooled children.
