In A Relationship describes a modern-day romance between four millennial friends. Starring Hollywood royalty, Emma Roberts alongside a talented cast, they deliver a brutally honest and relatable romantic comedy movie.

The first couple Hallie (Emma Roberts) and Owen (Michael Angarano) couple begin by describing how they met. Surprise, surprise! It was at a bar. However, their relationship is spiralling out of control as the couple fight all the time and don’t seem to have anything in common. However, Hallie thinks it’s a good idea for the two to move in together on the account that they have been dating for 5 years and Owen’s inability to make his rent. He adamantly refuses which leads the couple to break up.

Around the same time, Owen’s best friend sums up the courage to ask Hallie’s cousin out. According to him, she’s way out of his league which was why it took him so long to talk to her. She agrees, to the surprise of many which only meant she had other motives. Owen’s best friend treats her like a queen. However, she is still strung up on her ex and isn’t very interested in Owen’s best friend. As he insists that they’re dating, she, on the other hand, maintains that they’re just “hanging out”.

He doesn’t make it easier for himself on the account that he still lives at home and sleeps in his boyish bed. However, Hallie’s cousin seems to be accepting of his flaws and their relationship goes surprisingly well. As one couple is in the lustful stage of their relationship, the other one beaker like an old married couple. However, things get real for both couples and they have to decide the future of their relationships.

What the movie lacked in originality, it made up for in writing and delivery.  In A Relationship has a nostalgic feeling. Each character feels like someone you might know in real life. The realistic delivery makes it a more memorable movie than other cliché romantic comedies.

The director (Sam Boyd) did a good job in painting the ups and downs of a relationship with a modern day, Hollywood twist. This makes “In A Relationship” a very relatable movie to many young millennials who are also struggling with relationships. Though it’s a romantic comedy, the characters have deep conversations that are applicable in real life.

In A Relationship is a vivid reminder of the bad relationships we wish never happened and why we kept going back, whether it was the comfort or lack of a better suitor. Though it’s dubbed a romantic comedy, there were few instances of laughable humour. However, it has a light-hearted plotline and dialogue even in the real moments.

Overall, I would watch this movie again and highly recommend all rom-com junkies to watch it. Here’s the trailer.
