It was Easter break, and Sandra was looking forward to going home. She hadn’t spent time with her two elder brothers and her parents in weeks. Sandra, being her typical self, would be going home with a friend. She was a social butterfly and loved taking her friends home. Her new friend was Loise. They met at a charity marathon.
Loise had a sick sister, and Sandra was trying to cheer her up a little so she could feel rejuvenated before returning to caring for her. Sandra’s family was hospitable, and they welcomed Loise with open arms.
“Feel at home, Loise,” said Sandra’s mother.
“Thank you so much for having me,” said Loise.
Sandra’s parents asked about Loise’s family, and Loise told them about her sick sister and their mother. Sandra’s brothers were equally kind to her, and she enjoyed playing games with them when they were done eating.
Later in the evening, she got a chance to fulfil her mission. Sandra’s dad was seated on the balcony, enjoying a cup of tea. She went and sat next to him.
“I’m sorry I had to go to these lengths to get to you,” Loise told him.
“Young girl, what are you talking about?” Asked Loise’s father.
She took out a photo of her mother as a young woman and then showed him a photo of her sister.
“Makena is my mother, and the child you had with her is my sick sister,” Loise told him.
He was surprised. He then turned to her and asked her how much money she wanted.
“I wish it were as simple as money. I’m here because my elder sister needs a kidney. My mother and I are not matches, and I thought you would be a match,” Loise told him.
“I’m so sorry to hear that, but I don’t think I can help you. My family doesn’t know about your sister and mother, and I can’t risk them finding out,” said Sandra’s dad.
Sandra found Loise and her father in a heated argument.
“What’s going on?” Sandra asked. She gave Loise an accusatory look.
“It’s not what you think,” said Loise.
The rest of the family joined them. Loise’s phone fell, and Sandra’s mother saw Makena’s photo. She made a look.
“Dad, what’s going on?” Sandra asked.
Loise told them the real reason she was there. Everyone was silent for what felt like an eternity to Loise. Sandra’s mother was quiet, but her children were more expressive.
“Dad, you have another family?” The second-born son asked.
“Wait, did you only befriend me to get to my father?” Sandra asked Loise.
Sandra was spiralling with one question after another.
“Enough! I’ll explain myself after I talk to your mother,” Sandra’s father said.
Everybody else left them on the balcony. Sandra’s mother had been silent, trying to calculate Loise’s sister’s age. She must have been the same age as her firstborn or slightly younger. Sandra’s father confirmed her suspicions.
At the onset of their marriage, they had had many fights, especially during her first pregnancy. Sandra’s father had cheated on her with Makena. When Makena realized that she was pregnant, she told him, but he denied the child. He was an ambitious man who could also be cruel, and Makena saw that in him, so she left him alone. Years later, Loise’s sister tried looking for him, but he didn’t respond. Sandra’s father thought that was a closed chapter.
Given the situation, Sandra’s brother offered to drop Loise off at home since she could no longer spend the night there. When Makena opened the gate for them, she saw Sandra’s brother, who was his father’s spitting image.
“What have you done, Loise?” She asked.
“I’m sorry, mum. I had to try,” said Loise, crying.
Sandra’s brother drove away, leaving Loise and her mother arguing. Back home, Sandra’s mother was so upset by the news that she left it to her husband to tell the children. After he had explained to them what had happened, Sandra looked at him. She was both disappointed and disgusted by him. She was a daddy’s girl, and her father could do no wrong, but she was also an activist at heart. She fought for everybody.
“Are you going to give her your kidney?” Sandra finally asked.
“It’s the least you could do,” said one of the brothers.
“I don’t even know if I’m a match,” said their father.
From that conversation, it looked like the only way to gain his children’s forgiveness was by helping Loise’s sister. He was a match. Sandra’s mother was particularly worried about the surgery, but the rest of the family focused on the positive survival rates statistics.
Most humans opt to be optimistic when faced with tough choices. Unfortunately, Sandra’s father developed complications during surgery, and he didn’t make it. Loise’s sister got the kidney and went on to live a full life. Sandra’s family was never the same. There was a lot of blame going back and forth on the events that led to the death of their father. Sometimes Sandra blamed herself for bringing Loise into their lives, and sometimes she was angrier at her father for having the secret in the first place.
