Booming music could be heard coming from her apartment in the early hours of the morning and would stay on until late at night. Yet, no one really knew who lived there. Sasha spent countless hours locked in her apartment without any idea what was happening around her. Her party lifestyle made her an enigma to those around her but she also went to great lengths to stay low-key.

The pink light in her living room shone across the corridor of the apartment building every evening which showed some signs of life. It was also a rare beauty in a rather gloomy side of town. Anyone who passed by her apartment tried to catch a glimpse inside but the curtains blocked their view. Once in a while, she would bump into one of her neighbours as she headed to a party but she hardly spoke to anyone.

“Is that her?” She heard someone whisper.

“Yeah.” The other answered.

“She’s so pretty. Let’s go talk to her.”

She quickly hopped into the Uber waiting for her at the entrance before they got to her and headed to the party.

“You made it.” Her friend said as Sasha walked towards her.

The club was packed to the brim but Sasha and her friends had secured a VIP table on the upper floor. After a brief interaction between the two friends, they signalled the waiter who took their orders and in no time, their table was littered with bottles of expensive liquor.

“This is what I’m talking about,” Sasha said excitedly as she recorded their table.

As soon as she posted the video, she started receiving notifications on her phone. She took a quick glance, smiled then put her phone down and continued to enjoy the party. A few minutes later, she took her phone out again and snapped a selfie with her friend then recorded a video of the duo dancing together. Like clockwork, she opened her Instagram app and posted the video and picture to her 300,000 followers who were always waiting eagerly for her posts.

“We missed you.” One comment read.

“The queen is back.”

Every now and then, a random person would approach her to take a picture or simply declare their undying love for her.

“I love you so much.” One said as she took a selfie.

It was almost like watching a celebrity interacting with her fans. Sasha gained popularity on social media as a party girl or what many called “a socialite”. She was always spotted in the hottest clubs with mysterious men and famous celebrities. It seemed like she had come from nowhere yet she was hanging out with all these famous and rich people. Everyone wanted to know who she was, which earned her a lot of followers.

She wasn’t the first or only girl to rise in popularity just because she was beautiful and lived a lavish life. However, there was something special about Sasha that many loved. She was not arrogant like the other girls. She interacted with her followers both online and offline.

***********************************************************

For three years, she enjoyed the high life and everything that came with it. She flew all around the world, dressed in the latest designer clothes and was always the talk of the town. She even got invited to state events since she had befriended the president’s kids. There was nothing that she hadn’t done or nowhere that she hadn’t been.

However, Sasha always had a lingering feeling of emptiness. The party lifestyle wasn’t her thing anymore and it was slowly starting to take a toll on her. Whether she was in the club or her apartment, there was always a party. She saw her friends getting high on all kinds of drugs in her apartment to the point of overdosing.

Her attempt to escape the party scene slowly also meant that she had to give up her lavish lifestyle. She started selling her designer clothes to afford to pay rent and entertain her friends. The camel that finally broke the camel’s back was when a close friend of hers almost lost her life after she staggered to the balcony and fell from the apartment.

“Sasha’s best friend escapes death in her drug-filled house party.” One of the headlines read the following morning.

She was arrested but one of her powerful friends got her out and the case was swept under the rug. However, Sasha was given an eviction notice and couldn’t continue staying at her apartment.

“Do you want to live with us before you find another place?” Her friend offered.

“No, I think I’ll go home.”

“Home?”

“Yeah.”

She lied so that her friends wouldn’t look for her. The truth was Sasha had decided to move to a cheap apartment on the outskirts of the city. By the time she was moving out, she barely had anything in her possession. Many of her neighbours were shocked at her few possessions and the beat-up lorry that came to pick them up.

************************************************************

“How’s the new place?” Her friend asked over the phone.

“It’s different but I like it.”

“Where was it again?”

“Westlands area.”

“Wow, fancy.”

“You should come and visit.”

“Can I come over today?” She asked.

“Of course. I’m sending you the pin.”

When her friend arrived at the pinned location, it was nothing as she had expected. It wasn’t a serviced apartment in an affluent part of town. She didn’t see paved roads, plush gardens or a heated pool. Instead, she saw a dirt road leading to the apartment and a kibanda right beside the apartment. The inside was decent but it was nothing like Sasha’s previous apartment.

“It’s so dangerous. What if someone spots you and targets you?” Her friend asked as they enjoyed a glass of wine on the balcony.

“You’re so dramatic. There’s ample security here. Besides, I hardly go out and I never dress up when I’m here, unlike you.” She said.

“What if someone sees you here? You have a reputation to maintain?”

“Most people in this apartment are older with families. They have no idea who Sasha is. That’s why I like it here. No one can stalk or harass me, unlike those high-end Lavington apartments.” She said.

Even though most of the people in her apartment weren’t on social media, she still worried that someone would spot her, one day. It was bound to happen sooner or later and Sasha had to prepare for the day.

“So, what do you do here?”

“Work.”

“Work? What kind of work?” Her friend asked.

“You’ll see.”

“You’re so secretive. Teach me your ways.” Her friend joked.

“We’re not getting younger, babe. You have to start thinking about your future.”

“Girl, I’m 25. I still have many years to be hot and sexy.”

“Okay, but I’m tired of this party life.”

“Don’t say that. You have so many fans. You can’t just leave them.”

People started to distance themselves from her once they noticed that she was no longer popular anymore. It was a lonely time in her life but she knew that she had to go through such moments if she wanted to change.

In her solitude, Sasha discovered her true potential. She had a knack for politics. When she wasn’t blasting music from morning to night, she would watch news channels and follow political debates keenly. She had mingled with many politicians throughout her party life but hadn’t paid much attention to it until now. However, when she was younger, she always looked forward to watching the news with her father. It was one of her favourite childhood memories.

Her interest in politics continued to grow to the point that she started making commentaries on certain issues through a pseudo-account. She was particularly obsessed with local politics and was a big fan of a popular political commentator.

“Enjoying the live streams. Keep it up.” She commented on one of his videos.

Her comments and contributions eventually caught the political commentator’s attention and he reached out to her.

“Hi. I’m glad you enjoy my content. I’m Mike. What’s your name?” The message read.

As soon as she saw the message, she let out a loud scream and replied immediately.

“How can I not like your content? You’re the politics guy. You can call me Jane Doe.” She answered cheekily.

“I’m actually looking for a research assistant and I’ve noticed that you have very good takes. Would you like the position?”

Sasha couldn’t believe it. Such an opportunity could finally allow her to quit her party lifestyle completely and establish a career. However, she was hesitant since if Mike found out her real identity, he wouldn’t be happy about it. He had been very vocal and critical about the rise of a generation of women who thought life was one big party.

“I would love that.” She replied.

“Great. I’ll set up a Zoom meeting so we can talk and you can meet the rest of the team.

In a panic, she called her friend to help her figure out how she would attend the meeting.

“Just tell them that your camera doesn’t work.”

“That will give them a bad impression of me.”

“Okay, what if I pretend that I’m you? No one really knows me.”

“That could work. Be here by 9 am on Thursday.”

As she was setting up her laptop, her friend knocked on the door and she rushed to open it for her.

“It’s almost time. I wrote these notes for you but in case they ask you anything else, just wing it.”

“I got you.”

She did have Sasha’s back. Hunny was the only friend that she had left and she had proved to be a real one. Since Sasha moved to her new apartment, she helped her settle in and feel less lonely. She also didn’t betray her friend by airing her dirty laundry on social media like many would have done.

The meeting went incredibly well and Sasha was given the job.

“It’s an entry-level position so the best we can offer you is Ksh 50,000,” Mike said.

The price shocked both Sasha and Hunny. It was a fraction of what she would get in her club appearances. However, she knew that she had to make a lot of sacrifices if she wanted to live a new life.

She agreed to take the position and started working with Mike the following day.

“This is amazing. Keep it up.” Mike emailed her after going through her notes.

It was a full circle moment since only a few months ago, Sasha had left the same comment on one of Mike’s videos.

**************************************************************

She had been working with the team for nearly 5 months and Mike decided to organize a team-building workshop for everyone.

“Attendance is compulsory.” He wrote in the email.

This time, Sasha decided to go by herself. She had been working with the team for a while and had established a good relationship with them so she thought that nothing could go wrong.

When she got there, she quickly realized that she had made a huge mistake. They all recognized her immediately and she could see the look of shock on their faces.

“Are you Badgirl Sasha?” One of the employees asked.

She nodded yes and everyone went into a frenzy. They all scrambled to take a picture with her and it took Mike’s intervention to calm them down.

“What are you doing here? This is a private event.”

“I’m Jane Doe.” She revealed and everyone gasped.

“I’ve met Jane Doe and she’s not you.”

“That was my friend. I asked her to attend the meeting on my behalf.”

“So, is your work even your own?” Mike asked.

“Yes, that’s my original work.”

“You know that our reputation will be destroyed if anyone finds out that the Badgirl Sasha is one of our employees.”

“No one has to know. I’ve managed to keep it a secret for 5 months and I can continue until everyone forgets about my past party life.” She explained.

The rest of the team was fully on board with having Sasha around. After all, she had proved herself as a valuable member of the team. Mike, however, was still not convinced.

“How will anyone find out if none of us leaks the information?” One of the employees said.

“We’re a family. No one can leak this.” Another one chimes in.

“I guess they have a point. We are a family and I trust everyone in this team to keep it a secret. However, I don’t like the lies so I expect full transparency from now on.” He said.

Mike put her on probation until she proved that she could maintain a low profile. Sasha officially became part of the team after a year. She managed to escape her party-girl reputation and reinvent herself as a reputable political writer.
