Cinnamon is an aromatic spice often used in baking, brewing tea, and making stews. It’s found in the inner bark of Cinnamomum trees. Plenty of studies have outlined the multiple benefits of cinnamon, such as improving insulin sensitivity and antioxidant properties. However, new research has emerged showing that cinnamon improves memory, and brain health and reduces anxiety.

Medical students conducted the study at Birjand University, Iran. The students examined over 2500 cinnamon studies from PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. They isolated the types of cinnamon used, dosages administered, and participants’ demographics. The students also recorded the study’s duration, method, and quality. Of the studies, 40 met the criteria the students were looking for.

How cinnamon improves memory and mood

In those, the students found that the active compounds in the spice can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, coumarin, and tannins which are bioactive compounds that reduce oxidative stress in the brain.

Furthermore, one of the studies was conducted on teenagers who chewed cinnamon gum before a test. In this study, scientists found that chewing cinnamon gum for longer resulted in a better mood for longer. In addition, they also discovered that the students could perform better in exams. Chewing cinnamon gum enabled the brain to store data faster in working memory. Cinnamon improves memory because glucose enters the bloodstream faster, and insulin release improves memory function. However, chewing cinnamon gum is most effective within 15-20 minutes.

Cinnamon essential oils can improve depression and anxiety symptoms when used with conventional mental health care. Benefits Of Using Cinnamon Oil

How to take cinnamon

Consistent use of cinnamon improves memory. It comes in multiple forms. Cinnamon powder is most popularly sprinkled on toast, hot cocoa, or baked into pastries. You can also eat cinnamon-roasted nuts. Cinnamon rolls are also a popular snack. However, they can be high in calories and sugars. You can also sprinkle cinnamon on your porridge. You can also boil cinnamon bark and add the water to tea or chew cinnamon gum.

Cinnamon is safe for most users but can interact with some medications. The natural flavour, coumarin, can affect blood thinner medication. Furthermore, too much coumarin can lead to liver damage. If you’re on anti-coagulant medication or have diabetes or liver issues, you should speak with your doctor before consuming cinnamon.

Ultimately, this shows promise in how existing herbs can help scientists maintain brain function and memory for people predisposed to Alzheimer’s and other cognitive conditions.
