‘As I look back, I see that life is like a game of Solitaire and every once in a while there is a move.’ ~James Salter

Solitaire takes me back to the days before the internet was so easily accessible. It was a great pass time that could keep you busy for hours! But years later, the game has still won the hearts of some and they just can’t seem to let go. Solitaire is still enjoyed by many, and for a great reason. You can play card games like solitaire to improve your intellectual capacity. Solitaire is one of the best card games to improve thinking skills as well, the solitaire game can be very good for your mental health and it can help you exercise your mind.

Here are 6 benefits of playing the solitaire game:

1. Relaxes the mind

When you put your focus on Solitaire, life pauses for a minute. You’ve probably experienced it. That’s why you can play after game and before you realise it hours have passed. It helps the mind enter into a light meditative state. Unlike other games that need a high level of attention or logical thinking, Solitaire triggers a soft mental activity that works to relax the brain and dilute stress without shutting it off completely.

2. Great activity to do by yourself

Wondering how to foster your solitude? Solitaire is the way to go. It’s a lot of fun, competing against yourself and mastering how to get better each time. If you’re an introvert and are looking for some great ways to spend your time, here’s your chance. Plus, it costs very little to play, if anything, to play Solitaire.

3. Improves your memory

Solitaire is not only fun, but it’s also really good for your memory. Some of the benefits of solitaire are really subtle, and this is one of them. How does it happen?  Apparently, it’s possible to discern improvement in the players’ memory skills as they keep playing. This improvement is particularly notorious in the ability to unconsciously memorize the colors, suits, numbers, and even the order of the cards in the Stock, after going through it only once.

4. Teaches patience

Solitaire teaches you patience and delayed gratification. How? You slowly become more conscious about your moves instead of haphazardly making them. You will pay full attention to your overall strategy and how you’re moving the cards around and often wait before making a stack until the time is right. So, in short, Solitaire teaches you patience and delayed gratification.

5. Promotes competitiveness

Playing Solitaire makes you more competitive, which can be a good thing. The gig is, you’re competing against yourself to become better with each game. It makes you realise that in life, you should be your only competition. It is a passive and positive competition against themselves to increase their capacities. The best thing is that you will actually see yourself getting better, and there’s no better feeling.

6. It’s entertaining

If nothing else, Solitaire is really entertaining. It’s a great way to have frugal fun. You don’t even need a computer, you can play it on your phone. It can chase away boredom without ever creating a sense of frustration or failure. So if you’ve got some free time and you’re looking for a way to have some fun, solitaire is the way to go.

Where can I play solitaire?

To realize the benefits of playing solitaire, start playing! You can always play with a deck of cards, but the setup can take a while. Instead, you can play online with cards automatically shuffled and dealt for you. Here are three places we recommend to play online:

  • Solitiaire365 – A new modern version of solitaire with many customizable options.
  • Solitaire Bliss – Create an account on Solitaire Bliss and track your games and progress.
  • Microsoft Solitaire – Microsoft introduced the first version of digital solitaire, and now offers online and app based versions.
  • Solitaired.com – They have over 500 solitaire games, but their best game is FreeCell where you can compete in a game of the day.
