There are some things that you can only learn from family. Since we spend a huge part of our lives with them, family members play an integral role in developing the people we are today. They teach us a lot about ourselves and life, in general. Here are 10 lessons you can learn from family.

  1. Learn By Example

Sometimes, it’s a good example while at other times, it’s not. Either way, family are the best teachers in life. Our relatives have been a reference point for what to do and what not to do. As they say “Asiyefunzwa na mamaye hufunzwa na ulimwengu.”

  1. Unconditional Love

Who loves us better than our family? Every family has its fair share of drama but that doesn’t change the fact that you will always love them. You can always count on them no matter what happens. If you need proof of unconditional love, look at your family. But if you have toxic family members, here are 5 Signs That You Need To Walk Away From Toxic Family Relationships

  1. Patience And Tolerance

For those who have siblings, you know how annoying they can be. If they’re not taking your stuff without permission, they’re fighting over what to watch with you. Living under such conditions teaches you to have the patience of a Buddhist monk.

  1. Generosity

From a young age, our parents teach us the true meaning of generosity. And that in giving, we receive. Whether they taught us to share our toys with other kids, their endless sacrifice to give us a good life or help the less privileged, we can learn a thing or two about generosity from family members.

  1. Make Your Case

This might come as a shock to many since talking back to your parents came with more beatings but the older you got, the more your parents encouraged you to make your case. For instance, if you wanted to sleep at a friend’s place, you had to explain why they should let you do so. This, in turn, teaches you to speak up for yourself.

  1. Ambition

No parent wants their child to settle for second best. They encouraged us to be the best that we can. Additionally, seeing how our parents made a comfortable life out of life in the village teaches us a lot about being ambitious.

  1. Be Money-wise

You can learn a lot about money from your family. Though our parents may not have been the richest in the world, they made sure we were comfortable. You can learn how to prioritize things, how to make good investments and how to save money.  Here are some tips on Teaching Children How To Budget

  1. Spirituality

Spirituality is an important lesson to teach children. Through this, they not only learn about God but also how to be good. The lessons imparted in us as children stay for the rest of our lives which includes the lessons we learned in church or the mosque.

  1. Make Memories

As you get older, so do your family members and unfortunately, death happens. Though we can’t do anything to stop this, we can make it less painful by celebrating the people around us while they’re still here. No matter how busy you get, make time for the people you love.

  1. True Strength

Nothing tests your true strength like family. Whether you’re trying to make a better life for yourself, get over the loss of a loved one or get out of a dark place, your family will be with you every step of the way – either supporting you or making your life harder.
