Everybody was at the chapel except the bride. The groom, his groomsmen, the bridesmaids, and some of their vendors had been waiting for Shiru for an hour. Some of them were visibly angry, but Bennet, the groom, looked worried. His mood and expression were enough to prevent the angry ones from commenting publicly about the bride’s lateness.
“Weren’t you with her?” Bennet asked the maid of honour.
“Yes, she was. She said she’s having her nails done,” she responded.
Shiru walked in as Bennet tried calling her again.
“You almost missed your wedding rehearsal,” joked one of the groom’s men.
“I’m so sorry,” said a visibly drunk Shiru.
The wedding coordinator quickly got everyone to practise the entrance formation. It was over shortly.
“Baby, where were you?” Bennet asked Shiru.
“I was having my nails done. I sent the maid of honour to tell you I was on my way,” Shiru responded.
“But your nails aren’t done,” Bennet replied.
“I know. I had to leave and come for the rehearsal first since it took too long,” Shiru explained.
Bennet stopped himself from saying something. He looked at Shiru and then asked her, “Do you want to get married to me?”
“Of course, I do, babe,” Shiru responded.
The wedding planner interrupted them as she broke down the itinerary for the big day.
“Shiru, the photographer will be with you by eight o’clock to capture the makeup preparation and the other activities before the wedding,” said the wedding planner.
She proceeded to give Bennet more details. They were having a destination wedding, so they were all expected to leave for the place later that afternoon. After parting ways, Shiru travelled with her maid of honour.
“Shiru, where were you? You were reeking of alcohol,” said the maid of honour.
“Some friends of mine popped by the nail parlour, so we went to the parking lot to have some shots as I waited for my turn. By the time I was back at the nail parlour, someone else had taken my spot, so I went to the chapel,” Shiru explained.
“Are you serious? This is your wedding. Are you having cold feet? This is the best time to call off the wedding before everyone travels to the destination,” her maid of honour told her.
“Relax. Why is everyone asking me that? I’m marrying Bennet,” said Shiru.
“You better be sure. He’s too old to be dealing with your drunken antics,” joked the maid of honour.
“This again?” Shiru asked, rolling her eyes.
“I’m joking. You already told us you’re marrying him because you love him, not that he’s a mzungu with a bit of money,” said the maid of honour cheekily.
“Good. Now help me find someone to do these nails,” Shiru told her.
“Wanjiru! You’re exhausting,” she told her.
“I don’t feel like you’re taking your maid of honour duties seriously,” Shiru teased her.
“I need a mental hardship allowance,” joked the maid of honour.
The big day came. The sunrise by the lake was beautiful to watch. The team was excited. Everybody was in a good mood. Shiru was fully present. Even the wedding vendors who had been worried were happy. As Bennet was preparing, one of his groom’s men was watching Shiru’s stories on social media. Bennet joined him. Shiru’s caption caught his eye because she had joked that she was about to start her life sentence.
This was Bennet’s second attempt at marriage. He’d divorced his first wife in a very acrimonious divorce a decade earlier. Shiru was eighteen years younger than him. He’d met her while holidaying in the country. She had made him feel desired in a way he hadn’t felt in years. While they were together, nothing else mattered. He was happy. However, he also knew there was a disconnect somewhere because they were different people in the presence of others.
“Are you sure you want to marry this girl?” One of his friends had asked him.
“I have almost everything I have ever wanted in life, and she makes me happy,” Bennet had told him.
“There’s no nice way to ask this, but are you sure she’s not with you for your money? You know young girls have a reputation,” his friend had followed up.
Bennet had defended Shiru to his friend, but the question lingered in his head. When he read Shiru’s caption, he felt the doubts resurface. Her behaviour the previous day at the rehearsal didn’t make it any better. Despite that feeling, the wedding went on as planned.
They went to Seychelles for their honeymoon. While there, Bennet wanted to go to bed early, but Shiru wanted to stay outside longer. She stayed by a bar, and a young guy started flirting with her. She put her phone away and went on a stroll with the guy. Bennet tried calling her, but when she didn’t answer, he looked for her.
He found her making out with a guy. Shiru was startled when she saw him.
“Baby, it’s not what you think,” Shiru told Bennet.
“I’m too old to be running after you,” Bennet told her.
They took the fight to their hotel room. Shiru pleaded with Bennet and blamed it on alcohol. Bennet let it slide. They enjoyed the rest of the honeymoon. The next six months were full of marital bliss. Even Shiru’s maid of honour was surprised and thought she had misjudged her. Then Shiru called her, crying and asking her to go to her house.
“What’s wrong? Did Bennet do anything to hurt you?” She asked Shiru.
“He kicked me out,” said Shiru.
“Why?” Asked her maid of honour.
Shiru narrated to her how Bennet had found conversations between her and her ex. Shiru told the ex that she was with Bennet because he was her ticket out of the country. She wasn’t happy that Bennet’s contract in the country had been extended. Shiru had also been cheating with the same ex. She also told the maid of honour about the honeymoon. Bennet was done with her.
