Kaleb and James are broke. Years after university, while their classmates are doing well, they are struggling. A former classmate gives them an opportunity they can’t pass up. All they have to do is pretend to be nail technicians, but their real jobs will be to be male escorts. They were doing very well but every job has its dangers. How did they get here? A Web Of Lies, A Hidden Life, And The Moment It All Came Crashing Down: Part 1
As months turned to years, James was the first to express his interest in leaving the trade completely and starting a family. He had fallen in love with Bridget, the feisty bombshell from the coast region who worked as the cashier at the auto shop. He was smitten and ready to leave it all behind for her. Kaleb did not agree with this, and a wedge was torn between the two.
“James! Why are you behaving like a child? You know very well that we have work to do, we made a commitment, and we must honour it!”
“Brother relax; this is the choice I have made for myself. I am not asking you to leave with me, you can stay but I am out.”
“I knew that coast girl was going to be trouble.”
“Ei! Kaleb, leave her out of this. If you had someone you cared for you would understand.”
“Lovestruck idiot! You will follow any skirt that dangles over your head. A fool in love but a fool nonetheless!”
Kaleb shouted at his phone but really, he was shouting at James. He was in a cab headed to meet a client. Mimo, his usual cab driver, had gotten used to the bickering of the two men.
Mimo had met Kaleb and James at the auto shop, she had gone there to buy a side mirror. They quickly became friends and got close to Kaleb specifically. She ran errands for him, drove him around and even expressed her attraction to Kaleb on one drunken night that they both decided to forget entirely. Well, Kaleb did but Mimo had feelings that still lingered.
“Listen, the client has already sent payment for you. Get off your lazy self and go to work! What is wrong with you? You don’t want the money anymore?” Kaleb continued.
It sounded like Kaleb wasn’t giving James any time to respond. So, James hung up on him and this only infuriated Kaleb even more. The car was silent and awkward as traffic cleared up and they picked up speed.
Trying to change the subject, Mimo asked something that she knew Kaleb wouldn’t resist talking about.
“I saw your Mazda by the way, are those new rims that you bought?”
“You noticed? Yes, I got my baby some squeaky clean 20 inches of alloy. She is such a beauty right now. More is coming. I am sorry for being annoyed today. You know how James is sometimes.”
“You don’t have to apologize. This car has seen a lot of hysteria, rage and tears so I am not judging. I have always wanted to know though, why not drive your car to work? I am not complaining, but I have always wondered.”
“Where are all these questions coming from today? Who sent you to put me on a hot seat? Hehe but anyway. I don’t like mixing my work with my personal life. I don’t want people to know my every move because they know my car. How better to hide in plain sight than to blend in”
“Hide? What are you hiding from James?”
Kaleb told her it was nothing to worry about.
Mimo had always been curious about the line of business Kaleb and James were in. There was a lot of mystery in the way the two communicated, she picked up on the coded messages and covert movements. She had more questions but chose to remain mum and focus on her job.
Four hours had gone by, and Kaleb had still not called her to pick him up. If Kaleb was particular about anything in his life, it was timekeeping. He was never late and when he was, he always sent out a text or prompt that he was going to need more time.
Mimo went from being annoyed that she was being made to wait for longer than necessary, to being concerned that there was something wrong. Her suspicions were made worse by the fact that Kaleb’s phones were not going through, and he always had three on him. Confused and panicked, she called James and told him to try and get in touch with Kaleb.
“Maybe he will pick up your calls!” she expressed, “tell him I am worried about him, and I will be parked outside where he left me”, she added.
Mimo drove back to where she had dropped him off and found a massive crowd gathered. She felt a deep pain in her stomach. She knew something terrible had happened.
Kaleb was dead, shot once in the head. He was found naked, gagged and bound. Next to him was a woman, also dead but she had been shot multiple times, more times than necessary.
Mimo was in shock as one of the onlookers in the crowd narrated the ordeal to her. The onlooker’s theory was that it was a love triangle. The woman was married, Kaleb was caught in the middle and lives were lost.
“I don’t understand…” Mimo expressed as she struggled to keep her balance, adding, “Kaleb does nails!”
She was still in shock when someone grabbed her from the back. She went freely without knowing who was pulling her and where she was being taken. She was unable to do anything, she was frozen. When she came to her senses, she was in her car and seated next to her in the driver’s seat was James. He was driving her away from the horrific scene.
James had been contacted by the “agency” he worked for and had been alerted that there had been a confrontation between Kaleb and a client. They had been trained for moments like these. A quick message would be sent through a smartwatch and help would arrive. James arrived early enough to collect Kaleb’s work phones, but he couldn’t save his life.
“Mimo, how are you feeling? Bring some water. Let me roll your window down too”
Mimo felt a rage consume her from within, it boiled hotter and hotter until there was an eruption that manifested in her throwing the bottle of water at James and almost knocking him out. “You bastard, you killed him! Didn’t you!”
Luckily, James was able to weather the blow and pull over on the side of the road where he received more accusations, lashings of the tongue and blows to his body. He managed to cool Mimo down and get her to have some water and breathe.
“Relax Mimo, please! I didn’t kill Kaleb! What do you mean!”
“I heard you guys arguing today. You are always on each other’s necks! You did this, I know it!”
“Kaleb died because he got too greedy, he got too close to the sun, and he got burnt!”
Mimo was struggling to catch her breath at this point while also trying to wrap her head around the revelations that were coming from James. She wondered why a nail technician would be killed. It didn’t make sense to her.
James was stunned at her confusion.
“He has never told you, has he? Mimo, what we do has nothing to do with nails. We sleep with older women for money and Kaleb got too cocky and mocked a client’s ex-husband. He did this!”
“Wait, hold on a minute James. What are you saying?”
James went on to explain the whole story of how they had gotten themselves into this crazy life and how a client’s husband had gotten into contact with Kaleb and warned him to stay away from his ex-wife. Kaleb took it as a joke and continued meeting secretly with his wife. The ex-husband had tracked the wife’s phone and had forced Kaleb to beg for his life on camera before killing him.
James disclosed to Mimo that it was because of these kinds of threats and intimidation that had made him unsure about proceeding with the line of work.
“Mimo, that’s why we were arguing, because I didn’t want to continue doing it. We had made enough money; it wasn’t worth losing our lives over. I have been planning to leave for some time now. I was just tired.”
Mimo was distraught by all she was hearing. The onlooker she had spoken to at the scene was right. This was a love triangle, a crime of passion. Her eyes were red from tears and her hair was a mess from the one-sided battle she had put up against James. She didn’t know what to feel or how to feel it. The man she had secretly loved and adored wasn’t what she thought. But she had lost him anyway, she had lost him forever. She was broken. She opened her mouth to say the only words she could piece together at that moment. She wasn’t saying these words to James or Kaleb; she whispered them to the darkness of death.
“My Kaleb!”
