Valentine’s Day is a day that symbolizes love and a reminder of the love we have for each other, especially our romantic partners. How I wish that was the case for me. Valentine’s Day is one of my worst days and a reminder of how I found out my ex was cheating on me.
I’ve never been a big fan of Valentine’s Day. Being an introvert, I found the grand gestures and restaurants filled with couples nerve-racking. Nonetheless, I did appreciate subtle gestures of love. Even though I didn’t like going on dates or receiving bouquets, I still wanted my partner to show me affection. Luckily, I found someone who shared the same enthusiasm or lack thereof for Valentine’s Day.
Billy had my attention the moment we met. He was one of those guys who pulled you in without saying anything. He only needed to look at you and you would fall for him. However, I was with his friend at that time so we couldn’t be anything more than friends.
The chemistry between us was undeniable and when I realized that I had strong feelings for Billy, I ended things with his friend. We started dating shortly after but we had to keep things a secret for a while.
Things were great. We got along well and were almost in perfect sync. I kept falling deeper and deeper in love with him as days went by. After a month, we were ready to make things official and tell everyone that we were dating.
We invited our friends to a barbecue party at Billy’s place where we planned to make the announcement. Once everyone had settled in, Billy stopped the music and made a short speech.
“Today is a special day because I get to share some good news with you. Kristy and I are in a relationship.” He said and everyone cheered, congratulated us then resumed their conversations.
I managed to sneak out to the balcony for some air since the attention was a bit overwhelming but I didn’t enjoy my peace for long.
“So, you and Billy are together?” Dave, Billy’s friend who was courting me before, asked.
“Yes.”
“Really? You know he’s a womanizer. You saw how he used to change girls every week and you think he’s going to change for you.”
“He’s already changed. We’ve been together for a month and we haven’t had any issues.”
“Fine. Just don’t come crying to me when he starts cheating on you.”
“You’re just angry because I chose him over you.”
“I don’t have an issue with that. I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
“I’m happy,” I answered, then went back inside and sat next to Billy.
Though I trusted my partner, Dave’s words planted seeds of doubt in my mind. I started wondering whether Billy was cheating on me and I simply didn’t notice. He was probably good at hiding it since he had a long time to practice. However, I brushed those negative thoughts aside and chose to enjoy my relationship.
I couldn’t be happy if I constantly thought my boyfriend was cheating on me and since he hadn’t given me a reason to doubt him, I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
For the most part, Billy was a great boyfriend. He was the most intentional man I had ever dated. Every gift he gave me had a meaning behind it. He made my little introverted world feel special.
Then, all of that came crashing down on Valentine’s Day last year. It was our first Valentine’s Day together. We planned a romantic dinner at his place like most of our date nights but he insisted that he wanted to do something special to make the day more memorable.
“One of my friends is a chef. I’ll tell her to come and prepare dinner for us.”
“That sounds nice.”
“So, don’t be in a rush. Go and get your hair, nails and makeup done then you can come over around 9 when everything is ready.”
I couldn’t stop grinning. I was not just excited to have a private chef prepare a meal for me but also to celebrate Valentine’s Day with an incredible man. My love life was thriving and I couldn’t be happier.
I kept counting down the days until it was finally Valentine’s Day. It felt like Christmas. I woke up with an excitement that I only get on Christmas Day.
As planned, I went to town to get my hair, nails and makeup done for the big day. Walking through the streets decorated in red hearts and balloons, brushing past couples who were strolling as they engaged in conversation, only made me more excited.
The atmosphere was the same when I arrived at the beauty parlour. Everyone was buzzing with energy. Men were eagerly waiting at the reception for their ladies to get dolled up while others were helping their ladies decide which nail polish colour to get.
“Hi, I have an appointment for 2 pm,” I said to the receptionist.
“What’s your name?”
“Kristy.”
“Okay,” she said as she signalled to one of the beauty techs.
I spent nearly 4 hours getting dolled up but it was worth it. By the time I was leaving, I felt and looked like a new person. I got an Uber, went home and got dressed up for the night.
Everything was going according to plan. Billy had called me earlier letting me know that the chef had arrived and was preparing our meal but he hadn’t called me again. Around 8.30 pm, I called Billy but he didn’t respond. I assumed it was because he was busy with the preparation so I decided to go to his place to help him out.
When I got there, the house was locked and the lights were off but I could see 4 lit candles on the table. I used my key to unlock and make my way in. It was quiet but I could hear faint music in the background. I went to the bedroom where the music was coming from and was met by the sight of my boyfriend in bed with another woman.
Billy saw me and froze then quickly got back to his senses and started rushing to wear his clothes.
“You’re cheating on me?” I asked in tears.
“I can explain,” he said.
“Explain what?”
He was quiet. I didn’t need an explanation, anyway. It was pretty clear that he was indeed cheating on me. I left and went back to my place where I cried my heart out. Billy kept calling and texting me but I was too upset to talk to him.
A few days later, I replied to his texts.
“Why did you do it, Billy?”
“I didn’t mean to. My ex and I reconnected a few weeks ago and at first, it was platonic. We met in person and one thing led to another.”
“Was there a chef preparing dinner for us or was that another lie?”
“She was the chef. She offered to make dinner for me and I thought I’d invite you over later.”
“So I could eat her leftovers? You’re something else, Billy. You should teach a masterclass in cheating.”
That was the last text I ever sent him. Dave found out that Billy was cheating on me and that we had broken up and he didn’t waste time rubbing it in my face.
After mocking me, we went back to being friends and I promised to never date any of his friends again.
