It was a typical weekend for Cess. She wasn’t spending the weekend with her boyfriend, so she decided to spend it with her girlfriends. Her boyfriend, Ben, was going to spend the weekend with a group of his friends. Cess didn’t like them, but Ben had a side hustle with them that brought in good money. They talked briefly on Saturday morning, and Ben left for a gig. They would later go out with the said friends.
Cess tried texting Ben on Saturday night but got grey ticks on WhatsApp. She didn’t sweat it and decided to text him the following morning. He still didn’t respond, so she was angry at him but didn’t call him. On Sunday afternoon, Cess got a call from one of their mutual friends.
“Can you talk?” The mutual friend asked Cess.
“Yes, what’s going on,” Cess asked him.
“I don’t know how to tell you this, but Ben passed on earlier today. I’m so sorry for your loss,” said the friend.
“What? What are you talking about? Ben went out with his friends,” Cess responded.
“Yes, he was with his friends, and two of them died, and one is injured critically,” said the mutual friend.
“What? No, this can’t be true,” Cess said, wailing.
Cess’s friend, who was with her, took the phone and spoke to the person on the other end of the call. The person explained to Cess’s friend that Ben and his four friends went out after the job they had during the day. They went to a house party, where they invited a few girls. In the morning, things got chaotic, and one of Ben’s friends tried to force himself on one of the girls.
The girl screamed, and Ben’s friend got violent. There was a stabbing, and the neighbours came to find out what was happening. Somewhere in the commotion, three of the guys, including Ben and the violent guy, were attacked by the mob. Ben and another guy died while the third guy was rescued by the police, but he was in hospital. His injuries were severe. Two of the guys and some of the girls managed to run away.
After Cess stopped crying, her friend explained what had happened. She had enough strength to call back the mutual friend. The story raised so many questions, and she needed more details.
“Where was the house party?” Cess asked the mutual friend.
“They’re saying it was in Kabete,” he responded.
“Who are the girls? What was everyone doing when Ben’s friend hurt the girl?” Cess asked.
“I’m going to be honest with you. I think there were drugs involved, so some of them had passed out the previous night, and the commotion woke them up,” replied the friend.
“What about Ben? How was he mixed up in all this?” Cess asked.
“I’m sorry this will hurt you, but Ben was there with a girl he’s been hanging out with. They were in one of the other rooms. They came out half-naked when the screams started and tried to stop it. I think the crowd thought he was also responsible because he had blood as he tried to de-escalate the situation. That’s what one of the guys who escaped told us,” said the mutual friend.
It felt like a train ran over Cess twice. Her heart was crushed more when she heard about Ben’s infidelity. She couldn’t pinpoint why she disliked that group of Ben’s friends, but she knew she was right about them. It was hard enough that she had to deal with Ben’s sudden death, but she couldn’t bring herself to tell people the circumstances under which he died. It took her long to recover from the loss and betrayal.
